Add a β€˜speculation box’ to research papers Letter to the Editor

I like this from RW roundup, but can't get through the paywall. How will this idea change the conclusions? And what if the data is wrong? Does this affect the speculation?

Reproducibility Salon: what is spooky data, Mon, Oct 27, 2025, 7:00 PM | Meetup What gives some data a sense of authenticity while other data gets antennae up that something is wrong or "off"? Is spookiness as simple as being "too good to be true" or a

Hey hey! There are some tall pillars visible now in Maine that could be seen from states further south. Take a look north if you are in upper New England! The night is young, but it's great to see the aurora out already.

Science reporters could also add caveats like: "x says he is so satisfied with his breakthrough he has been giggling at random moments and explaining them to disinterested neighbors"

This makes a lot of sense. Science suffers from such a serious incentives issue that the more unhappy the authors are with their results, the more reliable they are likely to be.

A sharp view of a very dusty spiral galaxy. The center glows with a pale but warm yellowish light with two prominent arms of brown dust encircling it. Multiple pockets of blue stars are visible between the spiraling lanes of dust, and a smooth, soft blue halo of light fades to darkness at the edge of the galaxy as the stars and dust become more sparse. A few orangey background galaxies are visible through the dust. The scene is almost absent of Milky Way stars, making it a very clear view of the galaxy.

I think it matters whether or not Hippocrates made people drink willow bark tea as a precursor to aspirin. This is instructive as to how to troubleshoot knowledge creation in an era of failures.

This is worth a read. I especially like the line that scientists are not standing on the shoulders of giants if one of the giants ... wasn't. I have also started saying this as a way of explaining why fraudulent big results matter and must be exposed not forgotten.
