Months ago, I ordered @tkingfisher.com ‘s What Feasts at Night from the local shop.

Before it came in, I found a copy on my shelf, so canceled the order (I bought something else, don’t worry)

I’m finally reading What Moves the Dead, and guess what I have spent half an hour looking for?

With every passing day I better understand the mothers in Victorian novels who stay in their bedrooms with the curtains closed and complain vaguely about their “nerves.”

I want a horror movie called LEAN IN, about an up-and-coming young white executive lady who talks about leaning in all the time.

And then it turns out she is leaning in to shove people into a meat grinder, which she turns into a nourishing smoothie that she drinks in front of her subordinates.

Because I finally realized what I need right now:

A multi-perspective fantasy about resistance, the forms it can take.

What it looks like to give in.

How to come back from that defeat.

It’s my anxiety, hope, sadness, joy, in messy glory.

Exactly what it should be.

I’ve been struggling to write lately. My stories felt disconnected from my soul, even though I could recognize that they are a piece of me. It’s just a past me I can’t invest in the way those stories require right now.

Yesterday, I finally got some words down.

I must not dunk.
Dunks are the time-killer
Dunks are the little stress that bring on social alienation
I will ignore bad takes
I will allow them to pass, or block them
And when they are off my feed I will read things that matter
And where the takes have gone there will be nothing
Only I will remain

What's a book from a genre you don’t typically read?
Taryn - Airs Above the Ground by Mary Stewart, with its slow build and twists around a circus and the Austrian countryside.
Aurora - Time Is a Mother by Ocean Vuong for the word choice and imagery, painting a very different experience of the world

Writers are encouraged to open their novel with action to pull the reader in, but as Jeff Vandermeer points out in Wonderbook, that may not leave much room for escalation.

Today’s prompt is focused on helping you get through the middle of a manuscript. Giving your character some motivation to strive for, even short term, can be helpful to keep the reader engaged.-A

This week’s #writingprompt is focused on ways your character can change throughout a story. For some people their dream might shift & for others it might be what grounds their whole identity. Knowing what your character’s dreams are & the extent they might go to achieve them can help guide plotting.

Creating tangible characters can be such a struggle - how do you tell readers who they are without just saying it? How can I be intentional without making it obvious it’s intentional? -T

How does that shape their connection with each other? end main text. there is a little graphic with three purple trees at the bottom and below that text that reads @ the story wilds

Another prompt to dig into your characters’ psyche. How someone thinks about jealousy can reveal character backstory or how they might react in certain situations. I always find writing easiest when I have a strong understanding of who the characters are.–A

Charlie Jane Anders does a fantastic job summarizing how the speculative and surreal can make sense of our world. How have you utilized genre fiction to comfort, alarm, reason with, and analyze the world? Or is it something you've yet to try?
