Of course, there’s no need to single out early career. I’ve heard some gnarly stories about senior scholars too. But, you know, early career are more in my proximity.

It’s weird to think friends from grad school, who attended your wedding, or came to dinner, etc, are, in fact, not insightful, not innovative, not thinking about interesting things, or whatever.

Very weird to not cheer on your pals.

It’s also okay to be a mediocre scholar, lol. Most of us are.

Something I’ve always hated about young or early career academics is how competitiveness corrodes friendships.

I’ve cut people out who were once good friends because they couldn’t help but belittle mutual friends who were having academic success.

I’m confronted with this anew at AAR.
