Donโ€™t think weโ€™re getting him given Sesko to united. Donโ€™t see another 9 on the market that could fill the gap.

Holy hell I hope youโ€™re offered compensation. A year + of food that canโ€™t be eaten?

Bulgakov and Eriugena handle this pretty well.

I deeply miss DBH offering sustain engagements with ideas and authors, even if I didnโ€™t agree, like with his reading of postmodern metaphysics in Beauty and the Infinite, it helped to better situate and sustain his arguments.
Hoping this is a return to this.

If history has shown us anything, unity is often found in the worst things

Every so often I consider buying kieslowskiโ€™s decalogue and I never follow through. Itโ€™s like I canโ€™t imagine stomaching that level of sads for 10hrs

Nolanโ€™s Odyssey film is almost certain to suck if itโ€™s demythologized and everything is grey. Like, if the Scylla and Charybdis or whatever arenโ€™t in the film, whatโ€™s the point? To make a better version of Troy?

i get the schtick. It just doesnโ€™t scratch any itch for me.
I like dragons and shit mostly

Meh. I donโ€™t think it changed much of what Iโ€™ve found to be most interesting.
Write the essay and convince me otherwise I suppose.

Or write it and be wrong. Thatโ€™s what most of us do anyway lol

Itโ€™s why i restarted my dissertation after 25k words.
Felt like i should just go write about poetics. Tolkien lacked the sophistication to be a useful dialogue partner

But this is why wood is fun. โ€œWhy might the ring make you disappear?โ€ โ€œWell, what does sin do? The ring touches on those themes really interestingly, and juxtaposes the heart of the novel: community.โ€
Like, this kind of simple stuff is often more fun (and trickier) than the heavier theorizing.

I also think Tolkien is after something of both, but playfully rather than dogmatically. He was, after all, an expert in many of those foundational texts.

I think this hits on one thing I donโ€™t like about folks writing on Tolkien: he canโ€™t bear the weight of their proposals.

31.07.2025 02:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Ive not read his recently published book, though ive read some of the essay that I assumed turned into the book/ the talk we attended. The whole โ€œTolkien writes as a translatorโ€ thing is cool, but is too easily used as the single entrance into the stories.

I could be. The companies running private prisons are secret.
But folks doing facilities management or construction of even less savory places would be quieter.
Iโ€™ve heard this from a person or two I know who worked adjacent to, like, rendition kind of stuff

Thereโ€™s others Iโ€™ve forgotten both in the theology and lit and straight English/lit circlesโ€ฆ but it can all be counted on me fingers

But also, most of it is bad. And itโ€™s not bad because they care about the Christian stuff. It just isnโ€™t penetrating or saying anything particularlyโ€ฆ insightful. Though, I still think Shippey, Wood, and Le Guinโ€™s essay are good and fun for different reasons.

31.07.2025 01:16 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think itโ€™s a lot of word of mouth and RFPs

To be fair, most literate on Tolkien donโ€™t care about the Christian/catholic stuff. Christians who like Tolkien like Christian /catholic stuff.

31.07.2025 00:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Likely not a scam. A lot of companies that do defense, open source intelligence, or federal facilities are super quiet about what they do online. Itโ€™s not common to find a 1 page for a website, no LinkedIn page, etc.

And if headtube angle/fork rake are all nice, you can short shorter stems just fine.
Iโ€™ve ridden/sold modern gravel and touring bikes where reducing stock stem size absolutely ruins stability
