I deeply miss DBH offering sustain engagements with ideas and authors, even if I didn’t agree, like with his reading of postmodern metaphysics in Beauty and the Infinite, it helped to better situate and sustain his arguments.
Hoping this is a return to this.

Meh. I don’t think it changed much of what I’ve found to be most interesting.

It’s why i restarted my dissertation after 25k words.
Felt like i should just go write about poetics. Tolkien lacked the sophistication to be a useful dialogue partner

But this is why wood is fun. “Why might the ring make you disappear?” “Well, what does sin do? The ring touches on those themes really interestingly, and juxtaposes the heart of the novel: community.”
Like, this kind of simple stuff is often more fun (and trickier) than the heavier theorizing.

I also think Tolkien is after something of both, but playfully rather than dogmatically. He was, after all, an expert in many of those foundational texts.

I think this hits on one thing I don’t like about folks writing on Tolkien: he can’t bear the weight of their proposals.

Ive not read his recently published book, though ive read some of the essay that I assumed turned into the book/ the talk we attended. The whole “Tolkien writes as a translator” thing is cool, but is too easily used as the single entrance into the stories.

I could be. The companies running private prisons are secret.
But folks doing facilities management or construction of even less savory places would be quieter.

But also, most of it is bad. And it’s not bad because they care about the Christian stuff. It just isn’t penetrating or saying anything particularly… insightful. Though, I still think Shippey, Wood, and Le Guin’s essay are good and fun for different reasons.

To be fair, most literate on Tolkien don’t care about the Christian/catholic stuff. Christians who like Tolkien like Christian /catholic stuff.

Likely not a scam. A lot of companies that do defense, open source intelligence, or federal facilities are super quiet about what they do online. It’s not common to find a 1 page for a website, no LinkedIn page, etc.

And if headtube angle/fork rake are all nice, you can short shorter stems just fine.
