Heard from #AHRQ that the entire grants staff has been let go! They are unable to issue funds for grants already funded, let alone fund new grants. This is outrageous and will make Americans poorer and sicker. Why? A brief thread about just some recent AHRQ-funded research: #MedSky #HealthPolicy

This--from an amicus brief filed by 157 Members of Congress in one of the lawsuits against OMB's freeze on various federal funds--hits the institutional nail on the head. You cannot legislative effectively if you have no reason to believe that the executive branch will implement your choices.

While DOGE crippled medical research and cost-effective foreign aid programs, they also didn’t save any money. 🙄

I see @duke-university.bsky.social @dukemedschool.bsky.social got a letter from HHS and DOE that their funding was at risk of being cut because of alleged racism.

Another update: Northwestern University has still not received any funds from NIH since March 26, 2025.

We still have not received written communication stating that the funds are frozen, the reason why, or what can be done to restore it.

We had a multi-year initiative to increase the uptake of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits. We saw significant increases, but no differences in existing racial/ethnic disparities.

This is more than “blowing up a business model.” NIH and HHS have to be, at this point, around $100M in arrears in previously committed funding…with no official communication.

The current state of NIH is the epitome of waste- once the scientific institute vets the carry forward request, it goes into a black box where someone (political) outside the scientific institute has to approve the carry forward request before it is released. a thread...🧵

4008 Non-competitive renewals were due to be funded in May.

The total funded was 99!

Some is due to terminations, but most is due to slow grant making due to DOGE review and other impediments.

I was just asked to serve on an NIH Study Section.

I have a scheduling conflict and can't do it anyway, but...

Precipitously stopping clinical trials is deeply unethical.

Trials have to be adequately powered -- that is, have enough patients in them -- to answer a primary question.

Patients who enrolled early in an underpowered trial were exposed to all the risk of the trial for no benefit.

Now that trials are underpowered -- the trials can't reliably answer the question they were designed to answer -- participants' risk has been for nothing.

Beyond wasting effort and money, now the trials are underpowered.

This is deeply unethical.

Patients enrolled in these trials with the understanding that they were taking a risk to benefit others.

That's one small example.

Other colleagues have ongoing, multisite clinical trials in cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other areas that have to stop enrolling and/or following patients.

We have just notified our subawardees that we will no longer be able to pay them after June 20.

Much good science today is multidisciplinary and multi-institutional.

One project I co-lead is with colleagues at University of Utah, who SHOULD have received $800k over the life of the grant.

When, exactly, was this perfect time to reopen schools that Biden/The Democrats (tm) missed? How was that supposed to work? Schools closed in March 2020. Biden became president Jan 20 2021. Schools reopened for Spring 2021. Were they supposed to re-open mid-semester? Really?
