Disgraceful shit from CTV.

There was nothing that was in any way good faith about the pushback, and CTV rolled over. That's how I see this.

I spoke to @sonjfatah.bsky.social, associate chair of TMU's journalism school, who said this illustrates the threat political pressure campaigns pose to press freedoms in Canada:

“It’s a sacrifice of a journalist ...They don’t want to have to deal with the reaction from the trolls.”

Absolutely shameful that CTV caved to a disingenuous right-wing pressure campaign instead of standing their ground. It presents even more red flags about the state of the media in Canada.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.social did not deserve to be treated this way.

I’m devastated, but I’m also angry. I’m angry because this is an attack on press freedom.

If opportunities can be stripped from journalists simply because enough people repeat the same bad-faith narrative, how can anyone withstand the career impact of doing work that matters?

A dangerous precedent. This is a cowardly folding by CTV. The right instigated an online troll attack campaign, offering no evidence of their claims, and the network folded.

Viewers and Rachel deserve better.

What happened to @rachelgilmore.bsky.social is not just about CTV caving to Conservative pressures. There’s a larger issue: #cdnmedia are pushing out any female voices, voices of colour and Indigenous voices that aren’t centre-right or right. Even then there is very little representation
