There's not exactly a drought! All this handwringing is because there's a lack of interest, not a lack of content.

The question really is "How do we make men feel like they can preserve their historical position over women-as-a-class without going full right wing?" and that's a losing premise.

In fairness, sociopathy might, and significant numbers of them have it.

I think the problem is that the piece itself comes off differently than that post does. Also, many women have a visceral reaction to being told to expect violence if men's sexual needs aren't addressed, or that ongoing violence is the result of failing to take those needs seriously.

Like I very much see your point but I've also been in a lot of discussions in activism circles about avoiding burnout, and that's what this looks like to me.

OK but while I did campaign for her, I did not have her schedule and I was not at the center of that maelstrom. If she wasn't running on fumes by the end, she's not human. And now she's rested she seems to be jumping back in.

The manosphere is not about teaching men how to get laid. It almost certainly makes things worse on that front.

In which case we can't sell this to them as "how to get laid," because that still positions women as a prize they can earn. Not as egregious as PUAs, but nonetheless "do x in order to get girls."

I think a lot of the approach he suggests in the piece would be useful. But his framework is poison.

It's flawed from the get-go because it's coy about the actual goal of these men: not orgasm (or we'd talk toys, sex ed, sex workers, and destigmatizing all that) and not relationships (or we'd talk communication and more than sexual), but access to women. The focus is still on acquisition.

But that's not his actual topic. "Getting laid" stands-in for neither orgasms nor equitable relationships. It's a telling phrase. Acquisition. The other person involved is elided, because it's not about her desires or personhood. Getting "it," not "her," makes sex a thing she keeps from you.

We can talk about loneliness! About the decline in close male friendships and the disintegration of their emotional support systems! (We already do.)

And about healthy relationships and ways of finding them! (We already do.)

We can destigmatize pleasure, masturbation, sex workers. (We already do.)

This approach is poisoned at the root.

If this were about a sheer biological need for physical pleasure, then we'd have a different discussion: one about Texas's ban of sex toys and so forth.

But it's fundamentally about access to women. For ego? Social capital? Emotional validation? All of the above, I suspect. It commodifies us.

I obviously don’t love this, but also my coed housing at Brown had bathrooms alternating gender by floor…so we all just ignored the signs. Since I stayed in the same dorm multiple years but in different floors I spent either ‘09 or ‘11 showering in “men’s” facilities. No idea which, though.

We really need a better accessibility approach around this stuff!
