I had to ascend to the top of a stadium yesterday to do some sensor maintenance and my quads are simply non-functional today. I think itβs time for me to admit Iβm too old for this stuff now.
31.07.2025 20:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Back when I played fantasy baseball, I always named my teams "Perl Scripts".
I don't write Perl code anymore, but I do still edit in vi, which someone should probably stage an intervention for me about, but frankly, I'm really good at the art of chiseling stone tablets so I'm gonna keep doing it.

31.07.2025 16:13 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I sat in on one of the classes and it was by far the most entertaining math class Iβve ever witnessed. He was a special human being.

27.07.2025 17:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I see that I am listed on the schedule for Saberseminar. Just to be clear, I wonβt be there. My colleague is presenting a couple of things weβve been working on @weatherapplied.com.
I wish I could go, because it sounds like a good time, but I have a couple other things going on that week.
I quite like this, especially the topographic lines.
I almost wish Bay FC had screwed up their name and crest as badly as Boston did, so theyβd be forced into a redo. But alas, itβs inoffensive. But also clearly inferior to other new NWSL designs and to their Roots/Soul/Valkyries neighbors.
In most cases, if the wind is making it darn near impossible to homer to one side of the field, you can usually get enough distance to homer down the line to the other side. But in those cases, you will have a hard time keeping the ball fair.
21.07.2025 23:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Enjoyed this. One thing I haven't read anywhere about the potential swing-off is what you would do if the weather conditions make it practically impossible to hit a home run. I think you'd have to have a rule that if no one hits a home run in the swing-off, you play some more extra innings.
21.07.2025 23:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0My complaint with soccer penalty kicks has always been that they are too easy to score on, unlike, say, hockey's penalty shots. But recent events have made me willing to reconsider my opinion.
19.07.2025 20:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Are you sure you didn't just mistakenly wander into my daughter's performance in Sweeney Todd last night at the Academy of Alameda? It would be an easy mistake to make. Here's a review, in case you're confused.

She has one more performance as Toby tomorrow at 2pm.
Canβt credit the pitcher/goalkeeper when you just shoot it over the crossbar
17.07.2025 22:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Youβd think decades of watching the Oakland Aβs choke every time they needed just one more win to advance in a playoff series would prepare me for Sweden choking every time they needed just one more penalty kick to advance in a major tournament, but nope, itβs a gut punch every single time.

17.07.2025 21:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's a bit complicated, because drag and lift ends up as a bit of a catchall to adjust for errors. The errors could be actually be caused by something other than ball variation, like measurements in spin axis or wind direction, but there's no good way to know where the error is for sure.
17.07.2025 19:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1The largest effect we have @weatherapplied.com for Coors (temp + wind + altitude) is +56 feet. 93F, 37 mph wind blowing in through the opening in LF and curling around the stands and out to RF.
Have to keep the apex well below the rim of the stadium to maximize that effect. 80' apex > 110'.
Curious what Weather Applied Metrics actually does?

Iβm confident they *can* do it, but thereβs a speed vs accuracy vs cost tradeoff with such tech. If they added 1000 tracking cameras with a super duper slow mo frame rate, you could probably get it down to the millimeter, but then you might be waiting a week for the calculations to render a verdict.
16.07.2025 17:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, and particularly messy if the apex is above the rim of the stadium, because then the ball is passing through strong unsheltered winds blowing in one direction near the apex and then back down through sheltered winds blowing in various other directions.
16.07.2025 16:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0When the cameras track the ball through the whole trajectory, it is amazingly accurate. +-1 ft sounds right. On the occasions it loses track of the ball mid-flight, the windier it is, the less accurate what it fills in for the rest of the trajectory tends to be.
16.07.2025 16:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I was having such a nice relaxing evening enjoying the All-Star Game, eating dinner in front of the TV, and then the AL came back in the ninth and OH CRAP I MESSED UP PANIC PANIC PANIC ADRENALINE ADRENALINE ADRENALINE I'm probably not going to get to sleep for hours after that
16.07.2025 04:26 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It was a mad last minute scramble, but we got the home run derby part working. Didn't really matter much, it's been pretty darn near windless in Atlanta since the middle of the 8th inning.
16.07.2025 04:05 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Sorry, I did not prepare our code to handle a home run derby to conclude an all star game, my bad
16.07.2025 03:41 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We @weatherapplied.com had the wind adding about 5 feet of distance to CF and reducing it by about a foot down each of the foul lines, averaging to around +2.
Altitude and temperature added about another 9 feet, in comparison to sea level and our standard 72 F.
MetLife Stadium soccer field graphic, north goal on top, south goal on bottom, arrows pointing down and slightly to the left across the whole field.
Chelsea vs PSG, Club World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, this is what the wind looks like at 6 ft above the field. The team on the south end of the stadium is facing a mild headwind, the team on the north side has a slight tail wind.

10.07.2025 03:38 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 2I am on Team Jaffe here. Batting average is nowhere near the worst stat. The worst stat, beyond any reasonable doubt, is the "home run in X of 30 parks" stat.
I invite you to join me on my mission to send that stat to the factory next door to Target Field that burns garbage for energy.
