Itβs funny how after several days of people nervously posting about whether or not Newsom will sign SB 79, the best insight weβve gotten is from Gavin himself on a Fortnite stream

Gavin Newsom has been Californiaβs best housing governor ever -- SB 79 will make or break that legacy. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social

Nice to see the development at the former Dinahβs has been pushing dirt. I just hope itβs not completely stalled!

It was much better before the regional connector opened. They ran 6-minute headways and managed it pretty well! They want to build a bunch of new interlockings and change traffic flow on Washington and Flower, but they wonβt get any Olympics money now so who knows what they will actually do
30.09.2025 14:00 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The wildest part of this story is how the gold line authority is going to build an extension with one more station for $800 million.
26.09.2025 01:45 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0He has until October 13 to sign or veto. If he wants to make a big deal out of it, heβll do a big signing ceremony. But if he doesnβt take any action, it goes into law.
22.09.2025 02:43 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I must choose D. LB Cambodian food and OC Vietnamese food is just too good. But it really pains me to not have SGV, just so much good food there.
20.09.2025 02:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I really wonder how this is going to play out over the next couple years. Karen Bass wants to use state legislation to change ULA, but maybe city council will try to do something first. And then thereβs the whole HTJA measure
19.09.2025 14:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Which one?
16.09.2025 17:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah I think thatβs where they really just need to extend the cut and cover tunnel somehow.
16.09.2025 01:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβd love to know how much it would cost Metro to give the A/K/E lines exclusive ROW without grade separations (resignalling, crossing gates, no left turns, fences, etc). They would surely never do this because of the traffic impacts but Iβd imagine it would be billions cheaper than elevated/tunneled
16.09.2025 00:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah I guess that one would have done more to Windsor Square. But to me Hancock Park/Larchmont/Windsor square all feels the same, since they are all just so much less dense than the surroundings
15.09.2025 18:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Makes me mad Metro didnβt build the Wilshire/Crenshaw purple line station. Would have been beautiful to see a large chunk of Hancock Park upzoned.

12.09.2025 22:43 β π 27 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1βDonutβ rectangular plan shaped 4-story brick apartment building from Google earth. An interior courtyard with grass is visible, as are open walkways between units.
An image from inside the courtyard showing the open walkways, like a proto-1950s courtyard building.
Figueroa Arms at Fig and 41st is such an odd building. I had assumed it had to be from the 1910s to be so weird but itβs from 1927. I canβt think of anything remotely similar to this from the 1920s in LA (or anywhere else for that matter).
04.09.2025 06:18 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 2 π 0Iβm a huge fan of a separate line using SPTC Alt 4/5 technology, with the line ending at Westlake/MacArthur Park with a transfer to B/D lines. But I guess Vermont Corridor Partners is still going to look at like 3 junction options
01.09.2025 22:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Signal Hill must be doing pretty well, but Iβm pretty sure only a little sliver is affected by SB 79

Top of beaudry tower with no landing pad
In contrast, two newer buildings have flat roofs but no marked landing pad. For the Figueroa Eight tower, the environmental documents prepared for construction said it would have a landing pad, but it was constructed without one.
20.08.2025 18:26 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Small helipad on the top of Wilshire Grand building
The less stringent landing area still needs to be marked as a landing pad, and it looks like Wilshire Grand is an example of this. Not sure if I trust a random Wikipedia editor, but seems like they may have met the other requirements but still agreed to install this one.
20.08.2025 18:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβm also curious what Long Beach did about their helipad requirement, since older towers have them and the few built in the last decade do not.
20.08.2025 15:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Evidently the alternatives must be less ridiculous because it seems like the most recent high rises completed in LA do not have helipads. They still have mostly flat roofs though which is a shame.
20.08.2025 15:18 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I feel like every EIFD study theyβve done has just said βnope not feasibleβ and didnβt go anywhere
16.08.2025 06:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I donβt believe any of the streets chosen for this have peak hour bus/bike lanes. They were just general traffic lanes during peak hours.
15.08.2025 20:26 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Do you have a link to the 2025 plan? Wondering if itβs been shared to the service councils because I canβt seem to find it anywhere.
24.07.2025 01:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Also itβs pretty grim how the plan only identifies one funding source for further bus service expansion: congestion pricing (which is now pretty much dead under Wiggins/Bass leadership)
24.07.2025 01:18 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I canβt find the final version of the 2022 plan but the redlined version I can find says itβs permissible to do wider stop spacing βwhere local conditions allowβ like lower density/lower ridership potential areas.
24.07.2025 01:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I would hope that stop removal and new bus lanes could help here, but also hard to imagine anything they have done so far has made a dent considering buses in service are stopping more because of less Rapid and more Local service.
23.07.2025 23:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Metro advertisement for late night train service many years ago
Bring it back
23.07.2025 17:44 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The freeway widening plans are to eventually create a full network of expresslanes that will help people pay money to go faster without doing real congestion pricing, and I hope fund bus service along them. But it seems like a terrible cost/benefit with the way Metro caps the tolls
