Intermanual transfer and the default mode network. In the study by Rezaei and colleagues, participants initially learned a sensorimotor task with their right hand (the initial learning phase). When they later performed the same task with their left hand (the transfer phase), they made fewer errors at first. Rezaei and colleagues found that brain connectivity patterns, especially those linked to the part of the default mode network (the red region), were notably similar during the early stages of the initial learning (green shaded area) and transfer (orange shaded region) phases. The brain image shows the medial surface of the left hemisphere.
Applying skills gained in one context to different situations enables efficient #learning, even from limited data. This Primer explores a @plosbiology.org study which shows that the #DefaultModeNetwork plays a key role in this ability ๐งช Paper: plos.io/41LOAWf Primer: plos.io/417aTpd
18.08.2025 16:47 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A simplified model of immune education. The model developed by Tepekule and colleagues incorporates key inputs such as maternal human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and IgA, infant diet, and endogenous IgA produced in the infant gut. These inputs are then modeled within the context of the infant gut lumen, where IgA can mask or neutralize microbial taxa, and HMOs and plant-derived polysaccharides selectively promote different taxa. Model parameters are informed by existing in situ longitudinal IgA-seq data and infant feeding records. The main outputs include the abundance and IgA binding levels of each modeled microbial taxon, allowing for predictions of how variations in inputs (e.g., changes in breastfeeding or diet) shape the developing infant microbiome.
Early immune education mechanisms remain poorly understood. This Primer explores a @plosbiology.org study which uses math modeling to provide mechanistic insights into how the infant #ImmuneSystem learns to distinguish beneficial & harmful #microbes ๐งช Paper: plos.io/4lsJ8i5 Primer: plos.io/4oHrDNI
