Do we really expect five-year-olds to sit at desks? I want a school that understands play is learning | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett In England, young children go from glitter clay and building dens to classrooms a Victorian would recognise – and that system is failing many of them, says Guardian columnist Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

Reminder: it is the policy of @greenparty.org.uk that formal schooling start two years later, when children are ready.

Cyrrent system sets kids up to "fail": no they are not "school-ready". They are too young

Great to visit St Mary’s Primary School in Battersea today - one of the first schools to receive indoor air quality filters as part of my initiative to improve children’s health.

More than 200 schools will be getting indoor air quality filters soon.

We asked those sharing conspiracy theories in Sefton Park for a chat From calling climate change a hoax to warning about chemtrails in the sky, the group has a range of messages on display

Every Sunday in Liverpool’s most popular park, a group of people stand holding signs displaying a range of conspiracy theories

Here I take a look at who they are and what movement they are part of

I also asked them for a chat…

I'm an unshakably character-driven reader. Sure, plots are nice, and descriptive language, scene-setting, universe building, yada, yada. It's people, for me. It's all about building relationships with the people.

I love DFB, for that reason.

Still I'm sure it'll be fine. It's not like those expectations are based on a completely unproven product with deranged costs and hysterical levels of hype.

Conservatives: UBI strengthens families by cutting welfare traps that hurt marriage & stability.

Liberals: UBI upholds dignity by ending poverty without invasive bureaucracy.

Libertarians: #UBI boosts freedom by slashing government programs & giving individual choice with cash.

I want a government that asks 'how can we make things better for people?' not 'how can we make things harder for those people you don't like?'

The β€œEd Davey is obsessed with Farage” takes are weird.

A) The media is obsessed with Farage
B) If the next election looks anything like the polling, it will basically be a progressive/populist bloc election. Labour won’t be Davey’s enemy. They’ll be his path to govern.

I've read Sir Laurie Magnus's conclusion and Rayner's resignation letter.

Rayner did breach the ministerial code, but in a very minor way. Under previous governments, we saw more serious breaches on a daily basis without consequence.

I hope her absence from government is short.

05.09.2025 12:10 β€” πŸ‘ 815    πŸ” 155    πŸ’¬ 18    πŸ“Œ 1

Right wing media has had it in for Angela Rayner from the start - they couldn’t bear a working class woman being so powerful & dynamic. She made a mistake and has paid heavily for it. Very much hope she’ll return at some point in the future - our politics desperately needs more voices like hers

05.09.2025 13:52 β€” πŸ‘ 2907    πŸ” 633    πŸ’¬ 138    πŸ“Œ 33

She showed that a single mum from a council estate can become deputy prime minister, while vaping and going clubbing. She's a threat to their narrow-minded buttoned-up classist bullshit.

Rayner is absolute class. She's been a bit silly in organising her taxes, but that's not why they hate her. They hate her because she did not know her place.

Stop targeting people in desperate need of support who have been medically assessed as too unwell to work.

Focus on ensuring that people get prompt help from the NHS which reduces disability. Make the workplace more disability friendly. Then the numbers on benefits will lower.

Want to end gerrymandering for good? Scrap winner-take-all elections.

With Proportional Representation and Multi-Member Districts, politicians can’t rig maps to shut out competition.

1/9 Steve Reed and his Β£100bn: a timeline.
Steve Reed says he won’t nationalise the water industry, because it would cost Β£100bn.
πŸ‘€So where does that figure come from?πŸ‘€
He claims that it comes from his own department.
🚨But it looks like it came from the private water companies.

All the talk of ID and other responses is an attempt to escape this basic fact. And the reason people want to escape it is because they don't want to have the conversation with their kids. Shit, I don't blame them. I wouldn't either. But that's the only true solution.

Germany gave people €1,200/month no strings attached.

They kept working, slept better, switched to better jobs, and even gave more to others.

Turns out, when people aren’t drowning, they swim further.

#UBI doesn’t kill ambition, it frees it.

The promise of longer prison sentences may win votes but won’t stop crime! We already have harsher sentences than any other European country including Russia. But all the research shows though they don’t lower crime or successfully rehabilitate offenders, they are very expensive!

I really don't want to go through the whole rigmarole of seeing Farage win power and then fuck everything up and have loads of sympathetic voxpops with dismayed Reform voters expressing their regrets when it was extremely fucking obvious what would happen because his platform is incoherent garbage

I appreciate it's cliche and pointless to note this, but I don't think that six months into her term a hypothetical President Kamala Harris would be suing MSNBC, Bill Gates and The Guardian for reporting on her close personal friendship with a paedophile.
