Also, the pre-anesthesia bloodwork found that his creatinine was high enough to be stage 2 kidney disease... switched to a special food, and it's back to normal now, thank god. He wasn't having symptoms yet, so I had no idea. Hopefully this will keep him healthy for a good long while

Bean had his teeth cleaned in June, and it turned out he had two back teeth that needed pulled due to resorption, which they could only tell once he was knocked out. So I'm glad I had it done for his sake. Plus, when he meows directly in my face, it no longer launches a little stench projectile

If you can swing it, I highly recommend it! Tooth resorption is surprisingly common, and painful, and just gets more painful over time. Muffy had several teeth that they could see needed to be pulled, and I really wish I'd prioritized that, since she was probably in pain all the time

OH for some reason I thought en dashes were more complicated than that on real keyboards! My laptop really struggles these days (and I don't write much, anyway...). I'm also less of a prescriptive freak than I used to be, but I still end up spending too much time thinking about things like this

En dashes? Or hyphens? Hyphens surrounded by spaces are probably the most visually friendly option. I use two hyphens without any spaces, but I'll admit it's kinda ugly. En dashes are special characters, though, and we could get rid of them with very few people ever caring or noticing

Also infuriating: halfway through an email to my boss and our designer about FDA labeling regulations, I realized that the somewhat clipped, formal tone I use when I'm "WELL, TECHNICALLY"-ing sounds like a fucking chatGPT answer. How dare it encroach on my freedom to be an authentically smug asshole

The real question is whether or not AI properly uses en dashes. If so, that would be a true sign that something was written by either AI or a hardcore pedant who should be praised for their obsessive attention to detail

I'm not sure if it's the use of an em dash as punctuation at all or the actual em dash character itself that's seen as a dead giveaway for AI text. I specifically turned smart punctuation off on my phone so it would stop changing two hyphens into proper em dashes, because that was just too much

That's what I'm hearing. At some point I started using em dashes to wean myself off of semicolons; you'll surely remember that my love affair with semicolons stretches all the way back to high school. Em dashes seemed a little less pretentious? I'm furious that they're treated as AI slop now
