In bar fights, domestic disputes, and arguments at the company store, these worker citizens insisted on their right to a better life long after the government they helped install in power fell to a military coup.

Using court cases, union papers, and municipal records for a small copper mining city in La Paz province, I show how women and men made meaning out of the spoils of a revolutionary welfare state in Bolivia's nationalized mines.

The Limits of Revolution tells the story of the mining families who brought the Bolivian National Revolution of 1952 into their homes and neighborhoods and fought defend its vision of social and economic transformation in the face of a reluctant state.
