this is not to say exploitation doesn't exist in china! but something is not more ethical because it's made in the US lol. go look up how garment workers in los angeles are living and how much they make
this fact that in 2025 people still have this idea of china in their head as a place filled with dingy sweatshops that we're exploiting just because it's cheaper than doing it in the US (which we could totally do btw) would be laughable if it weren't genuinely racist
08.02.2026 15:51 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0china is light years ahead of us in terms of knowledge and infrastructure related to manufacturing, and sometimes it's literally not possible because we *don't have the technology or the relevant knowledge in the US*
08.02.2026 15:51 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0forget about small artists for a moment
companies don't manufacture things in china because it's cheap anymore, they do so because *that's where you do manufacturing*. that's where the experts are! as tim apple put it
Someone on tumblr made a post about how being a small artist doesn't absolve you from exploiting Chinese workers and they don't have sympathy for people losing money
do you know how many enamel pin factories there are in the US? Look it up!
this was around the time the tariffs on china were being announced and a lot of small artist shops were worried about not being able to continue operating, since a lot of them rely on manufacturers in china for their stock (enamel pins, bags, etc.)
