03.06.2025 22:13 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There is nothing wrong with prepared foods. Theyβre convenient, accessible sources of food.
But weβve systematically blocked access to them.
No prepared foods for SNAP, and now no peanut butter for seniors?
Even if the boxes got to the people who need them, we have no reason to think people could use them.
1. The boxes donβt have the pantry staples that turn fresh produce into a meal.
2. A lot of people receiving them canβt cook for themselves. Theyβre disabled, donβt have full kitchens, etc.
Thereβs no infrastructure for this. At all.
1. They fired thousands of staff so there arenβt any people to handle the logistics.
2. They want to cut out food banks, the only people who could handle some of the distribution.
So, these boxes are just going to rot at the farms that made them.
So the administration wants to replace boxes of pantry staples with fresh food.
It sounds nice, but it falls apart if you think about ANY part of this scheme.

Kiddo is twirling while I play Lucy Dacus, and I keep thinking about how one of the arguments we used for marriage equality in the mid-aughts was that queer couples mostly raise straight kids.

This is not how our food system works. This is not how anything works.
Weβve spent decades building mega farms that export tons of product, and we import most of what we eat.

The complicating factor is that there isnβt any rulemaking right now. Thereβs a regulatory freeze, so nothing is entering rulemaking.
No one knows exactly what this means yet, but it looks like Trump-appointed agency heads are just implementing EOs while things get challenged in court.
Objectively funny to watch the admin try to legislate gender only to REALLY struggle with biology.
Anyhow they whiffed hard enough that weβre all trans now, congrats.
