Irises are my favorites, bar none. The zinnias were gifts that kept giving.

I planted zinnias, marigolds, and something else in the spring, and only the zinnias came up. I HIGHLY recommend them. Easy and amazing, tall, and they attracted a ton of bees and hummingbirds.

This is a really great piece. I never saw Slender-billed Curlews outside of museums. Writing the paper that declared them extinct was a sad and unexpectedly emotional thing.

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

Juvenile male Rufous Hummingbird ringed on Vancouver Island this morning. His gorget is tiny at this stage in life. His new ring is also tiny! 🪶🇨🇦🧪🌎

A big ol' osprey sits along a small protruding branch off a dead, forking tree. Greenery behind. The osprey has long, broad brown wings angled downward, and a white dappled breast and neck with a slate-gray hooked beak. The eyes are intense and yellow but I do think it bears noting how absolutely doofy the bird looks -- like, the look on its face is one of, I dunno, bewilderment and panic and above all else incredulity? I get the sense the osprey is a very serious Follower of Rules but dwells largely in a Lawless Land where none of the other birds listen to the osprey's rules, and the osprey is just incredulous at this.
