Shockingly, the Tories did the right thing on secret Afghan asylum plan The initial error was egregious, but the response was, at least, morally clear-sighted and practical

We should be having a debate about how British incompetence put the lives of thousands of Afghans at risk. Instead we're having a debate about 'how many criminals they let in'. Tells you everything you need to know about where we're at as a country inews.co.uk/opinion/tori...

HUK – Job Description Visit the post for more.

It's internship season once again. This one at Orion Publishing is unusual because it's paid, can be done remotely, and is aimed at people making a career change or returning to work after a break.

Yeah. Good luck putting Asterix through AI. Translators for books are skilled workers. It’s not the same as understanding a holiday menu.

I've not read the book or seen the film, but found this investigation fascination.

It got me thinking - how often are back stories and other facts verified?

On a personal note I've written papers, books and columns about pregnancy loss, referencing my own, no publisher/editor ever requested proof.

Two eel ships on the Thames, between Paulus Warfe and Qeen Hythe, from Hollar's 1647 "Long View of London." You know they're the eel ships because they're labeled "the Eel Ships."

This is a rather long thread, and so the alt-text will be greatly diminished today. It takes a while to write narrative alt-text, and I don't have it in me to do a 14-post thread. I'd have to plan ahead for that, and I certainly am not that guy.

It's Tuesday. You're dragging yourself through the world, one cup of coffee at a time. Can nothing liven up this day?

How 'bout a thread of eel ships on maps? These maps are what got me into eels in the first place!

"Cool!" you say. "But wait...what's an eel ship?"

Well...

This looks like fun! A paid freelance opening to devise and run a creative workshop for young people, here in Hertfordshire. It probably helps if you love Ovaltine.

Hat man at St Paul's London Underground station

Hat man at St Paul's London Underground station

So this was a lucky photo that I didn't even know I had taken.

I composed this symmetrical scene at St Paul's London Underground station, & then suddenly loads of people rushed to catch the train. It was only when I was editing at home that I noticed I had captured a hat man!

I've bought three books today just from 'overhearing' Bluesky conversations.

Point being, if you like a thing, help the creator by talking about it.

This has been on my coffee table for dipping in for about two years, but this morning I read the final essay. Pullman is worth reading on any topic he chooses. Art, literature, religion are recurring themes of course. 💙📚

Quakers speak out against proposed terrorist proscription of Palestine Action Quakers in Britain have voiced deep concerns about the government’s plan to designate Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000.

We have deep concerns about government plans to designate Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

Nonviolent protest, and even acts of vandalism, should not be labelled as terrorism. Civil disobedience has been a powerful force for positive social change.

Today's accidental archival find: a newspaper laments the rise of "the sex novel", 101 years ago in 1924.

"The only serious competitor with the sex novel is the detective story, but it is much harder to write a successful mystery tale than ... "to fiddle harmonics on the strings of sensuality"."

It’s probably too obvious but have you read any Pratchett? If not, maybe try some of the witches books, starting with Wyrd Sisters.

A general content warning applies, in books of this era. Some character will say something in passing that we find deeply offensive, about someone poor/foreign/disabled/just different. I don’t always remember, years after reading the books, but I think Thirkell was very snobby/classist.

A Medical-History Museum Contends with Its Collection of Human Remains Supporters saw the Mütter’s preserved fetuses, skulls, and “Soap Lady” as a celebration of human difference. New management saw an ethical and a political minefield.

Many specimens in the Mütter Museum were obtained during surgeries and autopsies at almshouses, prison wards, and military field hospitals; few were collected with a contemporary understanding of consent.

I’ve really enjoyed Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers, and The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece by Tom Hanks. Absorbing narratives, good for escapism.
