The world must escape the manufacturing delusion Governments’ obsession with factories is built on mythsβ€”and will be self-defeating

Around the world, politicians are fixated on factories. But this obsession with factories is built on mythsβ€”and will be self-defeating

So only 3 Republicans were brave enough to vote no to this.. well kudos to them for putting the public interest first. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Sen. Susan Collins (Maine)
Sen. Rand Paul (Kentucky) Sen. Thom Tillis (North Carolina.

As the Trump administration moves to freeze foreign aid, halting vital humanitarian health programmes and medical research trials worldwide – I argue that the US stand to lose far more from this move than its 1% government investment in foreign aid. www.spotlightnsp.co.za/2025/02/24/i...

iii) a large proportion of households who can’t afford electricity and qualify for grants govt provides for free basic electricity services are unable to access them. iv) some municipalities collect payments for electricity but spend revenue delivering other basic goods and services v) corruption

The reasons municipalities have unpaid bills is because of a combination of factors - including I) mismanagement of municipal finances and infrastructure ii) tariffs that are poorly structured and don’t reflect the true costs/avoided costs of supplying/consuming power at different times of day/year

Secondly, if Eskom power was β€œso expensive” and distributed solar β€œso cheap” customers wouldn’t stop paying their electric bills, they would disconnect and go off-grid. But 99.9% of consumers who install Solar PV remain grid connected because it’s least expensive β€œbattery” you can find.

Firstly solar is not as cheap as it seems- flaws in the design of existing β€œvolumetric tariffs” mean that grid-connected customers that install solar PV can avoid paying their share of the costs of maintaining the grid and centralised power capacity - which they rely on when the sun isn’t shining

Cheap solar power is sending electrical grids into a death spiral Pakistan and South Africa provide a warning for other countries

This article is so misleading and inaccurate. β€œCheap solar” and β€œexpensive Eskom power” is not the reason SA consumers aren’t paying their bills or that Eskom and municipal distributors can’t recover the costs of power supplied… @economist.com.

Energy efficient appliances can save consumers a lot of money. The upfront cost of an inefficient lamp or fridge might be « lowΒ Β» . But consumers don’t sit in front of spreadsheets estimating lifecycle costs so they don’t realise the amount of power they will save by buying « the expensive oneΒ Β».

DΓ©jΓ  vu. In 2008, Zuma disbanded the Scorpions - a body investigating him for corruption. It was replaced by the Hawks which, as a judgement later read were β€œinsufficiently insulated from political influence in its structure and functioning…because…activities must be coordinated by the Cabinet.”

Having returned from a month long stay in the US, it’s clear that this will solve nothing. It seemed to me as the casual observer that the US could use more unskilled and skilled labour not less. With an unemployment rate of 4.1% I am sure the US economy can absorb and benefit from migrant labour.

Five million South Africans and 20 million people in total losing access to life saving ARVs as a result of the Trump PEPFAR stop work order. He’s a cruel and vindictive narcissist.. though it’s not clear who is trying to punish by denying most vulnerable HIV + people access to live saving drugs.

Fired for β€œexcessive focus” on diversity and inclusive hiring. Or simply because she is a women? It’s difficult to understand why ~57% of white women and ~45% of women in the U.S. voted for Trump. A man who believes the playing field is level & that if women are underrepresented they are inferior.
