The reasons municipalities have unpaid bills is because of a combination of factors - including I) mismanagement of municipal finances and infrastructure ii) tariffs that are poorly structured and don’t reflect the true costs/avoided costs of supplying/consuming power at different times of day/year

Secondly, if Eskom power was “so expensive” and distributed solar “so cheap” customers wouldn’t stop paying their electric bills, they would disconnect and go off-grid. But 99.9% of consumers who install Solar PV remain grid connected because it’s least expensive “battery” you can find.

Firstly solar is not as cheap as it seems- flaws in the design of existing “volumetric tariffs” mean that grid-connected customers that install solar PV can avoid paying their share of the costs of maintaining the grid and centralised power capacity - which they rely on when the sun isn’t shining

This article is so misleading and inaccurate. “Cheap solar” and “expensive Eskom power” is not the reason SA consumers aren’t paying their bills or that Eskom and municipal distributors can’t recover the costs of power supplied… @economist.com.

Energy efficient appliances can save consumers a lot of money. The upfront cost of an inefficient lamp or fridge might be « low » . But consumers don’t sit in front of spreadsheets estimating lifecycle costs so they don’t realise the amount of power they will save by buying « the expensive one ».
