I think sculpting is a pretty good metaphor. You start with a general idea of what you want, but you discover new possibilities as you go through the process, and the end result might be both high-quality and not what you thought you’d end up with when you finish.

The first IDE I used professionally (Borland Delphi) came with about 2,000 pages worth of manuals that weighed about as much as a bowling ball. That was my StackOverflow.
