Global‐Scale Shifts in Rooting Depths Due To Anthropocene Land Cover Changes Pose Unexamined Consequences for Critical Zone Functioning Earth's Future is a transdisciplinary, open access AGU journal examining the state of the planet, sustainable and resilient societies, and the science of the Anthropocene.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @hydrolejo.bsky.social and colleagues on quantifying global changes to rooting depth due to human-induced climate change: thousands of square kilometers of rooted volume lost; a spatial geography of root deepening; and changes in agricultural land and woody plants.

so interesting. yeah, there just have got to be ways to leverage the combinations of these paleo studies with remote sensing of the modern era - out with "trading space for time", in with "deep time + all space = better understanding of the planet"

Globally coherent water cycle response to temperature change during the past two millennia - Nature ... Global temperature fluctuations during the last 2,000 years caused consistent changes in ocean evaporation and atmospheric moisture condensation processes, reflected in coherent water isotope signals ...

Recently in Nature Geoscience, a culmination of NINEish years of work by 40+ people, led by the indefatigable @otherrock.bsky.social

Iso2k is the source of & inspiration for some of my best science & also the source of some of my favourite science people so it is WILDLY exciting to see this out

Ooh I’d not seen that paper yet. Looks interesting. Would be fun to work more combining remote sensing hydrology models and isotopes to better understand this sensitivity…

Billion-dollar US disasters are occurring have risen from from about one every four months in 1980 to one every three weeks now. Much of this is climate related (severe storms mostly), with growing population also contributiing. -- NCA5 πŸ§ͺ
