The head of orthopedics at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza was abducted by Israel in December 2023, tortured, and killed in Israeli detention around April 2024 in Ofer Prison. Israel is still holding around 80 Palestinian medical workers from Gaza without charge or trial, including at least 17 doctors, despite the release of nearly 1,900 detainees at the start of the ceasefire. Many were arrested during Israeli raids on hospitals after refusing to abandon patients. Families told +972 magazine in November that the doctors are held incommunicado, allowed only rare lawyer visits, and face beatings, starvation, medical neglect, scabies outbreaks, sleep deprivation, and denial of medication. Lawyers report extreme weight loss, daily abuse, and threats that detainees will never be released. Several doctors and medical workers have died in custody. Even high-profile cases, such as Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital and Dr. Nahed Abu Teima, director of the surgical ward at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis have not been released. Families are asking for sustained attention, saying silence is what allows the detentions to continue.
