I'm going to be doing some short classes for the Ad Astra Institute! First up, How to Not Do Eugenics with Speculative Biology! It's a brief primer on the history of race science and eugenics with suggestions on how to avoid fantasy or science fiction racism. adastra-sf.com/courses.htm#...
07.02.2026 00:08 β π 77 π 32 π¬ 1 π 4It's exactly this. Musk never gets called on the fact that he's been 10 years out from a moon colony for the last 16 years; Republicans never get called on anything; why wouldn't CEOs start testing out this new accountability-free zone and just say whatever's convenient to manipulate the moment?
14.02.2026 14:55 β π 1951 π 486 π¬ 32 π 7Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.
A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:

βMeasure Failsβ Budget Phasing Strategy Phase 1 - In January 2027: β’ 63% train hours cut and 10 station closures (20% of stations) β’ 30% fare increase β’ Target $30M of (half-year) reductions in fleet/non-fleet maintenance, police, and system support β’ Balance remainder of FY27 with one-time resources and financial deferrals β’ Assess: ridership/revenue impacts; performance of system support; impacts/risks of asset closures; and determine if Phase 2 can be safely implemented Phase 2 - If feasible, in FY28 (July 2027 service change): β’ Cumulative 70% train hours cut, 15 station closures (30% of stations), and segment closures (32 miles or 25% of system length) β’ Cumulative 50% fare increase β’ Target over $130M of cumulative budget reductions in fleet/non-fleet maintenance, cleaning, police, and system support β’ Defer remaining capital allocations β’ Based on observed conditions of closed system segments, study options and tradeoffs for stopping train service Phase 3 - When required: β’ If determined BART canβt safely or legally operate with available resources, stop passenger service β’ Use existing District tax revenues to secure system assets β’ Work to determine systemβs future
BART's newly released concepts for what they'll do if Connect Bay Area transit funding measure fails are terrifying.
Phase 1: 63% train hours cut & 10 station closures
Phase 2: Cumulative 70% train hours cut, 15 station closures
Phase 3 (if required): END BART SERVICE
We must pass the measure!

Younger people didn't buy into an older neoliberal elite's prejudices, the older neoliberal elite absolutely lost their shit at the notion that they might be called on to change, and fascists exploited that reactionary moment
Appears this is also true for fascism.

19.01.2026 20:19 β π 152 π 41 π¬ 11 π 1Pretty much every non-hype defense of LLM products begins with "first you must already understand your work extremely well, have ironclad ethics, and also verify all of its outputs in their entirety" and these are simply not realistic conditions for a product to *require* before it can be useful.
18.01.2026 17:51 β π 317 π 61 π¬ 8 π 7It's funny that one of the things people learn as very small children is "you get better at doing the thing by doing the thing."
Everyone learns this as a small kid, it is very obviously completely true.
And using genAI manages to instantly make people forget it, and start arguing about it.
This, by the way, is one of the places the political push for "public syllabi" goes: Even more people who literally do not understand what they're trying to evaluate almost certainly using LLM's to ask "is this stuff transgender or DEI" & then making administrative decisions based on that output.

A fun exercise:
Any time someone is talking about the benefits of AI and how amazing it is for humanity, imagine they are your aunt and uncle who got into Amway really hard and stealth-turned your baby shower into a pitch meeting. Ignore the product. Just...watch the sales pitch through that lens.
Maybe, if you're not actually in university classrooms, teaching students in the age of gAI, perhaps you might want to stop and listen when people actually in those classrooms raise concerns about what they are seeing; and not just dismiss us as luddites, or boomers, or cruel profs playing cops
