I think in the case of many Jews it’s even more dire - why would you want to share name roots with your neighbors who less than a generation ago were shipping you off to camps for mass murder? And when you returned after that - they made it known they weren’t happy to see you back.

In all fairness it’s worthwhile questioning why Netanyahu does anything at all with his track record. And I do think that it’s largely *Israeli* Jews who have hebraicized their names so that adds another wrinkle - but it has been done largely as a cultural reclamation after the holocaust.

The dynamics around changing names in Israel is far more complex than the “stolen Jewishness” argument that’s making some serious rounds. I think folks should step back and ask themselves if reclaiming your *culture* (note: not talking about “reclaiming” land!) is actually bad.

Also, secondary note, but the population of Israel is majority Mizrahi and Sephardi so even if we accept the ridiculous framing that Ashkenazi aren’t real… the genocide is still being perpetrated by a nation whose majority population *is*

The argument is nonsense top to bottom.

To me the major irony is in insisting that real antisemitism is only when the prejudice applies to a specific type of Jewish person, by claiming the very common antisemitic trope that (ashkenazi) Jews are lying, stealing, cultural chameleons.

Apparently for some folks it’s not enough to say “genocide is bad,” there has to be some underpinning of “and their culture is made of up lying thieves too!”
