It is pretty galling that the Supreme Court spent four years telling Biden "you can't do that without Congress" then allowed Trump to seize a once-unthinkable amount of power from Congress within nine months and concentrate law-making authority almost entirely in the executive branch.

The Supreme Court v. Democracy
The Nation’s justice correspondent previews the court’s coming term—and explains why it will never stand up to Trump.
"The Supreme Court is not our friend. It has been corrupted and weaponized and functions as an antidemocratic enforcement mechanism of the Republican political agenda." - @elienyc.bsky.social with the grim preview of this coming term.

According to eyewitnesses, armed ICE agents dragged kids out of their beds in the middle of the night, zip tied them and put them in rented vans while raiding an * entire apartment building* on the South Side of Chicago.

Following decades of racist policies that shut out Asian immigrants, the Immigration Act of 1965 gave millions of people the chance to move to the U.S. for the first time. People like our co-founder, Manjusha Kulkarni.

As Asian Americans, we have a choice to make. We can either fight to keep the doors open for future generations — or we can watch them close behind us.

The Hart-Celler Act opened the gates for immigrant students, workers, and families. Sixty years later, Trump is slamming them shut for the next generation. He’s detaining international students and deporting people without due process. He’s tearing families apart.

It was because of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement — who advanced the fight for immigration reform — that families like mine were given a chance to set down roots, open businesses, and transform the face of this nation.

In 1971, my parents and I moved from Mumbai to Kansas City, where they had secured jobs at the Trinity Lutheran Hospital. For a long time, this would have been unthinkable because of the Asiatic Barred Zone Act of 1917 and other racist immigration laws.

On this day in 1965, President Johnson signed the Hart-Celler Act. It ended the racist “immigration quotas” that kept Asian immigrants out, and it opened the door for millions of people around the world to call the U.S. home. People like me.

Judge Rules Trump Unlawfully Targeted Noncitizens Over Pro-Palestinian Speech
In a blistering opinion, a federal judge in Boston said the Trump administration used the threat of deportations to systematically intimidate certain campus demonstrators into silence.
A federal judge is putting the Trump regime under fire for its unlawful attacks on pro-Palestinian student protestors — including Korean immigrant Yunseo Chung, Indian immigrant Badar Khan Suri, and several other people of color.

There is no such thing as objectivity, and
the truth, that slippery little bugger, has
the oddest habit of being way to hell off
on one side or the other: it seldom
nestles neatly halfway between any two
opposing points of view. The smug complacency of much of the press—I have heard many an editor say, “Well, we’re
being attacked by both sides so we must
be right”—stems from the curious notion that if you get a quote from both
sides, preferably in an official position,
you’ve done the job. In the first place,
most stories aren’t twosided, they’re
17-sided at least. In the second place, it’s
of no help to either the readers or the
truth to quote one side saying, “Cat,”
and the other side saying “Dog,” while
the truth is there’s an elephant crashing
around out there in the bushes."

Democrats should never vote to fund a government that's waging war on its own citizens and firing officials *because* they insist on following court orders instead of breaking the law. Let Senate Republicans nuke the filibuster. None of this is normal and it shouldn't be treated as such.

The Free Speech Crisis for Black Americans Is Worse Than You Think
Don’t let Jimmy Kimmel’s return fool you: Black academics are more frightened of talking to the press than I’ve ever seen.
Since Charlie Kirk’s assassination, HBCUs received terroristic threats. Black students have been expelled or forced to withdraw. Black professors and teachers have been fired and placed on leave. A Black firefighter was placed on leave. A Black journalist was fired

Trump’s Slumlord Administration Is Gutting the Fair Housing Act
There can’t be true desegregation without ending discrimination in housing—which is precisely why the administration is rolling back enforcement of the FHA.
The Trump administration is trying to destroy the Fair Housing Act. The FHA is the third leg of the stool to social equality among the races, so it’s no surprise the white supremacist government wants it gone.
It must be saved.
