As Asian Americans, we have a choice to make. We can either fight to keep the doors open for future generations — or we can watch them close behind us.

The Hart-Celler Act opened the gates for immigrant students, workers, and families. Sixty years later, Trump is slamming them shut for the next generation. He’s detaining international students and deporting people without due process. He’s tearing families apart.

It was because of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement — who advanced the fight for immigration reform — that families like mine were given a chance to set down roots, open businesses, and transform the face of this nation.

In 1971, my parents and I moved from Mumbai to Kansas City, where they had secured jobs at the Trinity Lutheran Hospital. For a long time, this would have been unthinkable because of the Asiatic Barred Zone Act of 1917 and other racist immigration laws.

On this day in 1965, President Johnson signed the Hart-Celler Act. It ended the racist “immigration quotas” that kept Asian immigrants out, and it opened the door for millions of people around the world to call the U.S. home. People like me.

Last year, CNN ran a “fact check” of Kamala HQ that claimed we were lying for saying Trump’s plan is Project 2025.

Now Trump is outright admitting it’s his plan.
