How do electricity generators perform during worst case scenarios, bitterly cold temps, when it matters most? This is an example from Ontario, Canada. It is common to have minimal wind during bitterly cold temps @theecologyprof.bsky.social @theturner.bsky.social @volts.wtf @mbeconetwork.bsky.social

03.02.2026 13:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Given the ambient temperatures ranging from -20C to -30C in southern Ontario (where the bulk of the population lives), even with aggressive Cold-Cliamte designs, to do this heating via ASHP would need ~40GWe over and above the ~25GWe peak we had. This is on a system that averages ~16GWe now.
03.02.2026 13:04 β π 6 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1Let's talk about peak heating.
During winter storm Fern, Enbridge (the gas utility) has stated peak gas delivery was 90GWt. We had ~8GW of gas power (say ~15GWt consumption), and there is ~15GW of non-weather responsive gas demand, leaving ~60GWt peak weather responsive demand.
