How do electricity generators perform during worst case scenarios, bitterly cold temps, when it matters most? This is an example from Ontario, Canada. It is common to have minimal wind during bitterly cold temps @theecologyprof.bsky.social @theturner.bsky.social @volts.wtf @mbeconetwork.bsky.social

No, the United States does not need a costly national cancer study near nuclear reactors Routine reactor emissions pose no meaningful health risk to the US workers and population, a health physicist and a nuclear engineer argue.

A suggestion, check for debunkings before posting your anti-nuclear "studies" thebulletin.org/2026/01/no-t...

Marco Chown Oved had an article in the National Observor yesterday – sorry, just realized this is in the Globe by a similar person – or maybe just a different pseudonym.
Anyway… I think the answer to the title is β€œyes”, and I don’t wish to defend OPG, but β€œin depth”…

The Renewable Energy Honeymoon: starting is easy, the rest is hard - The Centre for Independent Studies The belief that Australia can decarbonise its economy by relying on the wind and the sun rests on a misplaced conviction about what the renewables rollout will entail.

Likely is too damn expensive just like #Renewables #EnergyTransition as this extensive, comprehensive, quantitative analysis shows. Don't go beyond 20% generation by weather-dependent IBR's that are incapable of ancillary services with very low capacity factors!! www.cis.org.au/publication/...

Well, I hope you're right about fossil fuels (and combustible fuels such as biomass, they are renewable, but almost as bad as fossil fuels) being "19th Century", but the data doesn't seem to agree with you and consider how many billions more need so much more energy. Consider reading the book.

Given the ambient temperatures ranging from -20C to -30C in southern Ontario (where the bulk of the population lives), even with aggressive Cold-Cliamte designs, to do this heating via ASHP would need ~40GWe over and above the ~25GWe peak we had. This is on a system that averages ~16GWe now.

03.02.2026 13:04 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

Let's talk about peak heating.
During winter storm Fern, Enbridge (the gas utility) has stated peak gas delivery was 90GWt. We had ~8GW of gas power (say ~15GWt consumption), and there is ~15GW of non-weather responsive gas demand, leaving ~60GWt peak weather responsive demand.
