‘Sleeping’ cancer cells in the lungs can be roused by COVID and flu
Inflammation from the respiratory infections seems to be the culprit, study in mice finds.
Hidden in the lungs of some breast cancer survivors are tumor cells that can remain dormant for decades — until they one day trigger a relapse.
Now, experiments show for the first time these rogue cells can be roused from their slumber by common respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 or the flu.

“[Vought’s] footnote stipulated that the agency’s funding for the remainder of the fiscal year could only go to staff salaries and expenses, not to new grants or certain grants that are up for renewal. Most NIH-funded research is done by outside scientists at labs across the country.”

“With these considerations, we expect to fund through the 4th percentile.”
There it is, in black and white, the destruction of cancer research in the US.

His custom cancer therapy is in an NIH freezer. He may not get it in time.
The purge of probationary federal workers included skilled lab personnel who would have finalized a customized cell immunotherapy for cancer patients.
Richard is a metastatic cancer patient whose life could be saved by a custom cell therapy — one that is currently sitting unused in a freezer because of Trump's NIH cuts.
Yet another example of the real impacts of the Trump Admin's attacks on science and our federal workforce.

Research funding has unexpected benefits. A lizard study led to Ozempic
In a new weekly video series, STAT's @HoganAlex examines the stakes of ongoing court battles over NIH grant funding.
A tizard study led to a drug now used by millions.
Yet federal cuts threaten that spark—and with it future innovation.
Don’t destroy the seeds of change & growth. Protect public research.
