If there was a poll about the shutdown that was like "60% of voters blame Democrats" we'd get wall to wall news "analysis" saying the Democrats must immediately capitulate or face electoral ruin, but when we have the opposite (like we do now) the media doubles down on efforts to blame Democrats

It's one thing to be politically divided into red states and blue states. We are now being militarily divided into red states and blue states. It's crossing the Rubicon, a bright-red flashing warning that the constitutional order is coming unglued, in a way that will have monumental consequences. /x

Never before in American history has one state's military force been deployed in another state over its objection.

I say never because the Civil War involved states whose governments legally ceased to exist, their offices vacated by constructive resignation, with no legitimate governors to object.

Donald Trump has heard the wails and lamentations of all the Rust Belt communities left behind by neoliberalism, and he has a message for them: fuck you and die

I know we’re going in circles but it is abundantly clear that they have literally no idea, let alone a plan, to fix their own mess.

Nobody is at the wheel, it is the first social media AI presidency and they drove themselves into a blind alley.

Again, going in circles, but Trump ****literally**** does not understand how the American government works. He has ****never**** understood it. He was, until this administration, protected from his own stupidity but now there is no longer anyone at the helm. It’s ***actual*** anarchic governance.

very cool that if you are working on behalf of right-wing culture warriors, you no longer need standing to have your claim adjudicated by the supreme court

Supreme Court: of course states can regulate, and restrict access to, medical procedures if there’s a compelling public interest

Colorado: (bans conversion therapy for minors)

Supreme Court: no not like that, we only meant abortion

I think the right move here is the same as the right move for any journalist working for a suspect new boss (which has happened to almost all of us): Do exactly what you would ordinarily do, exactly the way you would ordinarily do it, until you are told point-blank that you can't. Then ask why.

To be clear those guys are all idiots and the fact that people get their news from comedians who are trying to get a laugh and don't care about a single fucking detail of anything beyond that is very bad

This really makes it sound like a Border Patrol agent tried to kill an anti-ICE activist in Chicago and DHS lied to cover for him

Not to be a pedant but Bari Weiss was a junior editor who occasionally wrote opinion pieces in the opinion section, not a columnist.

β€œI know that there are some people in this room who don’t believe that my marriage should have been legal … and that’s ok. Because we’re all Americans who want lower taxes.”

I kind of can’t believe this Bari Weiss quote is even real, and yet www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/b...

at this point you have to acknowledge that there is no way that these guys don't try to mess with the 2026 midterms. there is absolutely no respect for the legitimacy of the opposition

perhaps the biggest story TFPever ran was a catastrophically shoddy argument that George Floyd ackshully died of an overdose. When confronted with irrefutable evidence that the piece was simply wrong, Weiss didn’t take it down, she asked her critic, @radleybalko.bsky.social, to come on a podcast.

We really need to retire "contrarian" as a descriptor for Weiss immediately.

The reason she is getting this job right now is because of her *non-contrarian* sensibilities.

She espouses views that the US's current power structure likes.

Stephen Miller also told everyone he was going to get red state National Guards to invade blue states *a year ago*.

its truly remarkable, you have to really take the measure of it and it's almost hard to comprehend it, but the president of the united states is having texas invade illinois and oregon just to make twitter content

If U.S. states have any degree of sovereignty, if there’s any states’ rights at all, it is the right not to be invaded by the armed forces of another U.S. state.

CBS News staffers are β€˜literally freaking out’ about Bari Weiss taking over newsroom EXCLUSIVE: β€˜People are using words like depressing and doomsday – feels like some sort of doomsday,’ one source told The Independent about the mood inside CBS News right now.

β€œ'The fact that we don't have money to pay journalists, but we have money to pay Bari Weiss between $100 and 200 million is indicative of what the Ellisons' true goal here is,' a network correspondent said. 'And it's not journalism.'"

The Billionaire Behind Trump’s Deal for Universities

the usual story. rich guy wants to punish universities for not clamping down on pro-palestinian protests and for doing too much to recruit minorities. at base these guys want the top tier of american universities to become, once more, safe-spaces for their dunderheaded failsons

04.10.2025 12:35 β€” πŸ‘ 5980    πŸ” 1345    πŸ’¬ 123    πŸ“Œ 72

also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)
