Bertrand Russell's message to future generation is so relevant: look for the truth and the facts that support it and DON'T BE DIVERTED BY WHAT YOU WISH TO BELIEVE ...

Neil Levy, The work of philosophy in the age of mechanical reproduction: How AI threatens the meaningfulness of philosophy - PhilPapers Some philosophers have worried that AI threatens meaning in life by making humans redundant in the workplace or by relegating them to menial tasks. While these worries may be justified, there's ...

I think dostoevsky would've liked free improv- emergence of process > existence of product and all that jazz (literal, sometimes, in the case of the roots of free improv music) #philsky

"the lack of consensus about terminology & principles of classification [for outlining embodied cognition] generates some important ambiguities" well thank goody it's not just me who gets confused when I look into EC and get hit with 'embodied cognition aka 4E which is actually many more than 4 Es'

the internet tendency to shame people for reading books in public period makes me press my book into my lap and hide like I'm harbouring a pet on an airplane I don't want some random weirdo taking a photo of me and going 'look at this pretentious son of a gun being literate smh'

I fear immortality more than I fear mortality, aeons of grief, desensitisation to the value of the time we have, and inevitably losing the ability to remember all but a fragment of the life you've lived

but I mean living as long as a turtle would be cool. maybe an oak tree but maybe that's too much

People also use this analogy about guns. So let’s treat chatgpt (and guns) like cars: you need a license, you need to carry insurance, and the industry is highly regulated.

they even exclude one another. The whole plea - for this dream is nothing else - recalls vividly the defence offered by a man who was accused by his neighbour of having returned a kettle in a damaged condition. In the first place, he said, he had returned the kettle undamaged; in the second place it already had holes in it when he borrowed it; and in the third place, he had never borrowed it at all. A complicated defence, but so much the better; if only one of these three lines of defence is recognised as valid, the man must be acquitted.

every minute of writing I'm ping-ponging between 'this is such a fantastic experience' 'I'm completely unqualified' 'this is really great practise to get me revved for my diss' 'I am way too inexperienced to contribute anything valuable to philosophy yet, if ever' 'this is great' 'I KNOW NOTHING'

writing an essay for university will never be as anxiety inducing as beginning to co-write a paper for an actual journal with a philosophy bud who, yknow, has an actual PhD and sure I got some conceptual engineering and gender and social epistemology insights to give but Idon'tevenhaveafulldegreeyet

Some of the bottles of rice and formula and flour Egyptians threw into the sea have actually made it to Gaza - now people in Cyprus and Lebanon are joining the effort, with scientists from all over the world virtually assisting them in figuring the time and location to do so based on the currents. πŸ’š

think I'm gonna have to just hole up in my room and cry for 3 days when I finish mary a fiction I had time to read the first 2 short, short chapters today between looking after my brother and I already felt my gut wrENCH this is too close to home in many many many ways and thoughts and experiences

me holding a copy of 'mary, a fiction' by mary wollstonecraft, with a 'double 9 books' logo next to author name (cover shows painting style, back of a woman with long red hair, a white shirt tinted red in the light and a red skirt with houses in the background and a red/purple/blue cloudy evening sky) and beneath it a copy of 'the black prince' by iris murdoch. beneath the title it reads 'introduced by sophie hannah'. Along the binding on the left, there is a red strip which at the top reads 'vintage classics'.

so pumped, my summer philosophy fic reads have arrived! I've wanted to read wollstonecraft for a couple years ever since I read about her in 'philosophy queens' and immediately projected on a personal level- my uncle rec'd 'the black prince' to me recently also & I've never read murdoch so yay!

semantic externalism- aside from beint a scepticism solution it a) changed the way I looked at language + helped me verbalise my icks with how it's used, b) helped me understand hermeneutical resources quickly and c) weirdly catalyzed my discovery of 4E cognition. putnam is an absolute babe.

intrigued by how dreams sometimes draw their material from neither the most newsworthy, most talked-about, nor even most personally significant events of the previous day

but from a relatively obscure term contained in the footnote to a translation

aha a translation

of course

Fascinating. Microsoft emailed me to say it was raising the price of Microsoft 365, but when i went to cancel it offered me me the old price β€” without all the AI bullshit.

It’s forcing AI on everyone and making them pay more for it, then only telling them they don’t have to if they try to cancel.
