I actually drew this last year before Hank’s awesome exoparia paper, it’s just that I was already putting rictus tissue over the jaw muscles

Bringing it home with the background. The impact explosion of dirt & dust with the rex’s foot was the last touch, done with white paint & some ink wash. 7/7

Fleshing it out. I try to think of this stage as sculpting in 2D, visualizing & describing the contours of the forms, giving them texture, trying to make them tactile. Trying to let the brush do the heavy lifting.6/

More luck the second time around. Feeling insane by this point. Drawing is such a wildly bipolar experience for me. Crushing lows with just enough triumphs 5/

My first attempt which I ended up scrapping. The rex head was just not as cool as I needed it to be. You gotta get your rex right 4/

After picking the winning unreferenced layout I made a folder & gathered a large amount of ref. Skeletal shots from different angles, muscle diagrams, animal photos, costumeing & gear for the character, background ideas 3/

Misc layouts. I just wanted to draw dinosaurs. I was asked if I could please throw in at least one person so it doesn’t get confused as strictly a dinosaur book lol. Pencil, micron pen & copic markers on copy paper 2/
