I’m weighing in on the 9-syllable Star Wars movie only to say that there wasn’t a single shot in that trailer that was not an exhausting retread of characters and scenes we’ve seen many times before. Even the sets, lighting, and art direction appear to be completely on auto-pilot.

I think Lego was very pleased to have their cake and eat it too when their fan base started investing so heavily in the lore. They had some stellar marketing, package design, and the comics that punched way above their weight class. All of this success in spite of the core design flaws. Business! 🤢

The dire business circumstance of Lego in the late 90’s is inseparable from early Bionicle design. Desperation to create a cost effective line latching onto the “collection” craze outweighed lore. They’re Power Rangers. Cheap and 90% interchangeable. Their most compelling trait is the business model

So yeah, that’s what I want to tell you about The Last of Us Season 2 (so far)

And perhaps that’s the rub…the sets, vfx, and sound are great, but this production still feels rushed. The writing, the uninspired direction, unconfident editing, some casting…I know Hollywood has to strike while the iron is hot, but I could have waited the standard 7 years between installments

Shot compositions feel random at times. Characters are blocked at strange distances (a tell of green screening) Ellie and Dina’s lack of chemistry is only intensified through odd placements in scenes…maybe they’re devoted to the blocking from the game, but it more often seems rushed

The action set pieces in TLOU S2 borrow heavily from the source material, and as such, they are phenomenal. It is in the crucial quiet moments, where the audience needs to connect with characters and understand their relationships, environments, and the stakes of their conflicts, that things falter

As an aside — yes, I know Andor had one of the largest budgets for a TV show ever created, and the most storied VFX department in entertainment in their back pocket. But TLOU is no upstart indie darling. This team has massive resources too

Gilroy, along with his fantastic directors and designers, created a world with high stakes, dark and conflicted characters, and gripping narratives within a universe whose source material previously included teddy bears, casual racism, and farts
