It should be pointed out that a 30% margin isn't really an 'ambitious target' so much as it is setting up future justifications for layoffs and downsizing once the impossible sales goal fails to be met. It's "Dead Space 3 needs to sell five million copies" but brand-wide.

A lot of good games and peoples' careers died on the altar of this frankly impossible goal and players should be more mad about this than they'll probably express.

Looks beautiful. I've been working through Pedrosa's works this year, and there hasn't been a miss yet. Impressed by how structurally diverse they all are, while still retaining this unifying attention to and appreciation for slice-of-life interactions between people, be they strangers or family.

It's obviously not the only game that does this well, and YMMV, of course. I don't fault anyone for bouncing off of this. But for all my frustrations—and for all the hilariously filthy things I yelled at my TV—finishing Silksong is one of the most satisfying feelings I've experienced from a game.

Those unforgiving enemy gauntlets and runbacks between bosses aren't design flaws; they're intentional bits of friction forcing you to encode & consolidate new techniques in your mind, and there are these brilliant moments where, hours later in a boss fight, you'll see why the game made you do them.

Incidentally, I was reading 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘐𝘵 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 for a work presentation while playing Silksong, and I kept seeing the same principles of cognitive science and learning theory I was researching show up in both the combat and world design: desirable difficulty, retrieval, interleaving, varied practice...

I finished Act 3 of Silksong, & I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Getting to that true ending is BRUTAL, Sisyphean at times, & you're consenting to dozens of hours of failure. Yet, as difficult as the game is, Team Cherry deserves recognition for how well they teach you to endure & improve.

this is true and it was terrible and i used to complain about it all the time back then. but the backlash to this, resulting in the current near-total lack of personal memoir writing, is not great either. it was concurrent with the backlash to "identity politics" imo

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Another reason why indie development is so important. There are important stories to be told in our medium, and large corporations are too scared to tell them.

A story isn't watered down by fantastical elements and "finding the fun." It's watered down by people scared to speak truth to power.
