I wonder if it would be beneficial to have some kind of mechanism by which genuine experts (PhDs and MDs and other experts) can put forward their credentials and submit to a background check in order to have an immediately visible “blue check” type thing to show their expertise in a given area.

Part of the reason is because the solution is part and parcel with the problem.

By suppressing imports, you can make domestics more competitive, but on an uneven playing field.

Domestic production is able to grow without having to be efficient or keep prices to a competitive minimum.

This is called Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI). The idea is to make imports more costly in order to make domestics more competitive, usually in pursuit of growing a nascent domestic sector.

Many countries in Latin America tried this in the 70s-90s.

It has a sketchy track record.

Be wary of this happening here.
