05.08.2025 09:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A double whammy today, as I was travelling via ferry, so this choice feels apt:
Sea Drift (Op.69) is one of Coleridge-Taylorβs later partsongs and his longest, showing his brilliant skill in handling choral forces.
Coleridge-Taylor wrote many songs in his short career, and here is one excellent example, setting Christina Rosetti: When I am Dead, My Dearest. The song was later used by his daughter, Avril, in a piece titled βIn Memoriamβ dedicated to her father.

Ballade in A minor (Op.33) was Coleridge-Taylor's first commission for the Three Choirs Festival in 1898. The commission came about when Elgar suggested Coleridge-Taylor after declining the commission. Conincidentally, there are moments where you can hear references to Elgar's Enigma Variations.

01.08.2025 08:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Nonet (Op.2), composed while Coleridge-Taylor was a Royal College of Music student and premiered on July 5, 1894, shows the influence of his teacher Charles Stanford and Brahms. In later movements, we can also hear the influence of DvoΕΓ‘k, who became a lasting inspiration to Coleridge-Taylor.
01.08.2025 07:53 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0August marks the birth of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and to celebrate this, I'm going to share a piece by him every day leading up to his birthday on the 15th. There is a huge amount of music to choose from, so I've selected pieces that demonstrate the variety and breadth of his career. #SCT150
01.08.2025 07:50 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Come listen to me talk about Avril Coleridge-Taylor and her music!! Also thrilled that my editions of her orchestral work, To April, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylorβs Meg Blane are getting outings in the Autumn season.

A brilliant day for Howells yesterday. First, an exceptional and thought-provoking talk from Dr @jonathanclinch.bsky.social on Howells and Paradise. Then, a brilliant performance of Paradise Rondel and Hymnus Paradisi under Adrian Partington. @threechoirs.bsky.social

Last night's Prom, featuring the UK premiere of Charlotte Sohy's 'Danse Mystique'! Hopefully the start of her music being heard much more in the UK.
Excellent playing from Randall Goosby and the Orchestre National de France under Cristian MΔcelaru.

02.07.2025 08:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#NowSpinning Howellsβs Elegy for Solo Viola, String Quartet and String Orchestra. This is deeply introspective music, often played low on most of the strings giving it a very soulful feel, particularly in the Viola part. Itβs a beautifully searching moment in a great programme.
