I am begging Canadians to understand that Canada Post, like public transit, should not be a business - it's a service.

Canada Post is a lifeline for rural, remote and Northern communities and overall, we need to re-evaluate why people think they "need" random shit delivered ASAP.

When we think of sexism, it's easy to think of *active* efforts to discriminate against women. But sexism also operates *passively* - like through our inaction on issues like childcare and paid family leave. In that context, return-to-office policies are sexist in consequence, even if not in design.

Also, I know it is a small point in the overall march towards fascism, but the idea that gender is performative and a spectrum is backed by science.

The *actual* β€œgender ideology” is being imposed by the folks who insist, against fact and reason, on a strict binary.

There are two competing narratives on this: science changed, or Republicans changed. You can figure out for yourself which one is more likely.

The psych job market may not be dead... but it is gravely injured 😬 So far it's looking like the Trump administration's attacks on higher ed/research are going to have more than 2x the impact on the job market as the covid-19 pandemic. #psychjobs #neurojobs #academicjobs

Girls and boys in our sample aspired to jobs of equally high salary, but girls were interested in more prestigious and higher-educated careers.
Girls were also more likely to enroll in university-track postsecondary programs (as opposed to vocational or technical programs) than boys.

Girls interested in STEM careers tended to be interested in either careers in medicine, or careers specifically in women-majority STEM fields like pharmacy or psychology.

As expected, high school boys were more interested in gender-stereotypical careers than girls were.
And, interest in heavily men-dominated blue-collar jobs was associated with stereotypes advantaging girls in language arts, and with beliefs that men should avoid femininity.

This administration has thrown literal grenades at the rickety foundations of American academia, and for some reason, neither the national media nor university administrations are actually talking about as the economic, social, political and cultural threat/crisis it is. What a terrible loss.

This reminds me of this excellent new article that shows how ChatGPT actually increase language anxiety and linguistic insecurity for Chinese international students for found themselves relying on it more and more in ways that took away their voice.

AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.

β€œThe AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, β€˜leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”

No one wants to hear this, but it’s true. Either we can value education β€” not for a select few but for anyone willing to put in the effort β€” and provide the requisite resources, or we can watch it become a pursuit available only to an elite minority, with everyone else getting a cheap facsimile

Genuinely, Germany was *THE PLACE* science was done. If you wanted to study Physics, or Psychology, or Medicine, you learned German.

And then.

Again, you cannot unplug 1/4-1/5 of an R1 university's budget & expect the same quantity or quality of "things" on campus. The math simply doesn't work. And pretending it does & we can uphold our "core values," & not talking loudly & publicly about how it doesn't, is not a strategy. It's madness.

A PhD-level expert isn’t someone who can answer any question off the top of their head. A PhD-level expert is someone who will stare at some piece of information, say, β€œthat doesn’t seem right,” and then spend enormous amounts of time obsessively hunting down every piece of information they can…

My book (out this week!) describes how a school responded to 2 struggling kids, supporting a White girl and suspending a Black boy. It's not surprising that AI recommends teachers use punitive measures for students with Black-coded names - the data is based on the world we live in.

The finding that the LLMs were more persuasive when they loaded their arguments with false claims raises some serious ethical questions. At some point in time we’re going to have to ask whether laundering deception through an llm is any different than deceiving participants.
