I guess my hope would be that it would eliminate some albums that get in more on name recognition than passion -- like albums that everyone seems to agree are the artist's fifth or sixth best.

The case can be made that it's still eligible for the 2002 tourney, so we'll just have to push for it again then.

I like this idea. Just throw every album that got, say, 13 nominations into the seeding round so that the borderline picks get more consideration, and see what shakes out.

Contest winners/editor picks could start with an automatic 10 seed points or something so they don't fall out of the tourney.

"rich dipshit owner doesn't understand the industry he's bought into and clumsily destroys what made it good" feels less like a narrative unique to the washington post and more like the music that's been playing in the background of all our lives for at least 40 years

I don't own a lot of jazz, but I do have Dave Douglas's WITNESS, which is . . . interesting. Tom Waits pops up on one song, and Yuka Honda (of Cibo Matto) plays on a couple as well.

The Social Disease, by Japanic 10 track album

Japanic was a Houston band that I saw play a bunch back in college. I re-listened to THE SOCIAL DISEASE a couple days ago, and it held up way better than I expected.

Not sure if it's streaming, but it's available as a free download on Bandcamp. RIYL post-punk, new wave, Talking Heads.

After re-listening to it a few times for the tournament, I'm pretty sure I agree. IIRC, "Adopduction" was also the first LSF song I ever heard.

I watched LISTERS tonight thanks to this list and really enjoyed it. I don't remember hearing anyone else even mention that movie, so thanks for calling attention to it!

Yeah, I can't blame anyone for not being into this. I guess I'd recommend it to anyone who liked the Cardiacs album in the '89 tournament, which I also recall being divisive.
