Open water is so close this year (highly unusual) that seeing groups of Emperor Penguins out front of Scott Base is becoming a regular occurrence. Fun experience for people on base, but a stark and sobering reminder that change is here and is affecting more than humans.

The cover of the book WOMAN ALIVE by Susan Ertz. Illustrated with a drawing by Tom Gauld in shades of reds and pinks which shows a retro-futuristic city. In the arched door of a tall tower stands a female stick figure. Stairs lead down, through a layer of clouds to lower levels and tunnels from which a crowd of male stick figures emerges.
I drew this cover for WOMAN ALIVE from @manderleypress.bsky.social "A forgotten #sci-fi #dystopian classic, first published 90 years ago and now reissued with an introduction by Graham Norton". Preorder it now: www.manderleypress.com/shop/p/womanalive

03.11.2025 02:09 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A chart of a few toxic nudibranch seaslugs, ranging in shapes and coloration, compiled by Universlings and using photography by David Doubilet. We've got: Chromodoris annae (blue and yellow) Chromodoris sp. (Purple with black and white and yellow, in two examples) Thecacera pacifica (orange and black) Halgerda batangas (mottled red dots) Mexichromis marici (red dots on white, with some yellow) Nembroths kubaryana (dark green, neon green, orange) Risbecia tryoni (yellow and brown) Bornella anguila (brown with fantastic frills)
Good morning, nudibranchs!
The world's a tough place, but nature is full of reminders that we can survive it by being as soft, squishy, & glorious as we are dangerous to mess with.
So whatever colours you're flashing to tell predators to eff off today, keep up the good work, & just keep swimming!

Pier and light house stones are in yellows and oranges with some red in shadow of curved wall on right. Line details are in blue, red, and white. Lighthouse has green railing around base, a green narrow door on the left up 3 or 4 steps from base, and a green lantern on top. 09.10.2025 13:15 β π 343 π 97 π¬ 1 π 0My photo shows a polychrome mosaic depicting Mediterranean marine life using earthy-coloured tesserae (mosaic tiles) against a black tessarae background. At the centre of the mosaic is a pale-coloured octopus composed of off-white and light brown tesserae with some of its writhing tentacles wrapped around the body of a lobster composed of light red, and pinky-brown tesserae. The octopus has an egg shaped body/head and it stares at the viewer with large eyes made of brown and pink circles with black centres. The octopus and lobster are surrounded by various species of large and small Mediterranean fish and a mollusc, including an eel and a flat fish. On the left hand side of the scene there is a small kingfisher bird on top of a rock. Some of the fish appear to be watching the fight between the octopus and the lobster This mosaic comes from the House of the Geometric Mosaics in Pompeii. Now on display at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples.

Illustration from 1771 depicting a crab labeled "Cancer arenarius" amid delicate, branching seaweed labeled "Lithophyton." The crab is detailed with prominent claws and multiple hairy legs, positioned centrally on the seaweed, showcasing marine life native to the Atlantic regions of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. The image features soft brown and gray tones on a faded cream background, characteristic of historical natural history prints.
