3. Transport limited current: quantify gas transport to the catalyst using O2 reduction as a probe reaction

All these techniques complement each other and gives a deeper view into the state of the electrolyzer in action.

As an electrochemist, the coolest bit was how we demonstrated different ways to quantify the enhanced hydrophobicity of the system:
1. In-line gas pressure changes: indicate gas pathway blockage
2. Capacitance: measures degree of water penetration into the electrode pores

He made these intricate copper nanowires with twinned boundaries (where the crystal structure across the boundary is a mirror image), with a high degree of facet control and enhanced hydrophobicity.
These properties led to selectivity and stability for CO2 reduction to C2H4.

Five-fold twinned copper nanowire gas diffusion electrodes for electrochemical CO2 reduction with enhanced C2 product selectivity and stability Copper nanowires with fivefold twinned structures (t-CuNWs) are shown to be effective as cathode catalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in a zero-gap electrolyzer to produce ...

UKRI Interdisciplinary Centre for Circular Chemical Economy 2025 Environment, Sustainability and Energy Horizon Prize: awarded for advancing circular economy solutions for the UK chemical industry through chemical recycling, biomass conversion and direct carbon dioxide reduction.

We won a prize!

The UKRI Interdisciplinary Centre for Circular Chemical Economy won an RSC Horizon prize. I was part of the team, as a postdoc with Alex Cowan, working on CO2 reduction to chemicals. I really enjoyed working with great people from different disciplines.
