Chicago Public Library's budget cuts would mean losing HALF of the materials budget. It would mean losing 90 staff members.

Cop budget's fine, though.

Leftists really have to prioritize public libraries in budget fights.

"If discovery tools return hallucinated results, the credibility of the library itself could be undermined. Students may come to see the library’s systems as just another unreliable search engine."

I work with STEM researchers + the ways ML could genuinely aid humanity are astounding. Using ML for analysis that the human brain is not capable of is good actually. Your brain is however very capable of writing that email! Ethical oversight has to weigh enviro impacts vs benefits. Not consumerism.

In New Jersey, a single mother struggled to figure out how to feed her two young sons with $50.
In Oklahoma, a 61-year-old woman questioned whether driving to a food pantry was worth the gas money.
And in Colorado, a woman grabbed food from a Walmart dumpster.

sounds like many people are canceling travel plans this november due to the government shutdown and decreased flights nationwide

as a native american who does not celebrate thanksgiving, i humbly ask that you consider donating your cancelled travel costs to native organizations in your communities

No it’s important to listen to this. Because then you understand that many of them will do ANYTHING to keep power. Remember Musk got involved in the 2024 election after saying to Tucker β€œif she wins” I am definitely going to prison.

So we need to move knowing that nothing is off the table for them.

To put this in scale, Elon Musk's salary from Tesla alone could fund the SNAP program for the entire country into 2034.

If you are a Democratic senator watching these results and the lesson you take is "I should cave and help Republicans reopen the government for nothing more than a promise written on toilet paper" then you shouldn't be in the Senate anymore

It’s frustrating how Mamdani gets tarred as a far left radical very freely in the media despite holding mainstream western democracy positions while Trump never gets called fascist or even far right despite holding Marine Le Pen positions and even further right!

We have to make it safe for students to try things they aren’t already good at because otherwise AI is a logical choice. They want to learn but there are material consequences of trying something and doing poorly at it.

Among the things that the shutdown is laying bare is this: so many federal employees live paycheck to paycheck while doing crucial, stressful work. The same may be said, of course, of so many other working Americans. While our oligarch class rakes in money hand over fist. This is not sustainable.

This criticism I usually see is that farm boxes (like farmers markets) are a kind of performative consumerism that isn't sustainable for small family farms (logistical costs/transport/fees). Maybe that's true elsewhere, but I think if you are surrounded by local farms + co-ops, you should sign up!

I've seen a lot of criticism of farm boxes #onhere but this is how most of the small farms surrounding us in NorCal work. They sell to restaurants, and they do weekly farm boxes you pick up at a distribution site in town.

No better example than what happened in the Bay Area when progressive DAs and mayors got elected circa 2020. We were inundated with the SF doom loop beat and stories about the shoplifting epidemic that wasn’t (which got a person killed), which ended in a wave of recalls of said progressive electeds.

For every $1 in benefits fraud, agencies spend $3.72 trying to detect it, based on the unproven assumption that means-testing lowers the rate of fraud. But there's evidence to indicate that trusting people to self-report what they need would be cheaper overall, even factoring in fraud/abuse.
