It is the deepest of bummers to listen to John Smoltz broadcast a baseball game. He hates the game so intensely it almost makes *me* hate it!

the ending of THE GODFATHER, the best american movie ever made, doesn't work without diane keaton's final look --- at the realization of who she's married and what her life is going to become and what corruption lurks behind closed doors. unforgettable, inimitable work. RIP.

Something I love that was especially precious pre-widespread internet adoption is moments where you got into some kind of important books/ movies/ music/ art in general that was otherwise unavailable from you. Like a friend who made you That One Mixtape, your random video rental one time, etc

Christ, I’ve seen comprehensive Frederick Wiseman documentaries about ordinary institutions in New York City that were shorter than last nights Tigers-Mariners game.

3 Screenshots from the movie "The Shape of Water" (2017): First, a woman in profile is seen changing a calendar date, with the subtitle "That's when you're planning on releasing him?" The setting is dimly lit with intricate wallpaper. Second, an older man with glasses stands in a warmly lit room holding a paper bag, the subtitle reads "On the 10th?" A woman is visible in the background. Third, three figures are silhouetted against heavy rain, walking across a wet industrial setting, their backs turned to the viewer.

I didn't write a review of TRON: ARES because it's too boring and I feel asleep and I don't care.

So I guess that's the review?

There's never been a bigger gap between the visual/audio experience and the plot. Terminally boring. 3/10 πŸŽ₯

The George Romero-supervised restoration of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) from MoMA and The Film Foundation is now on Netflix.

It's also on Criterion Channel, but it's nice to see such a significant (and subversive) indie classic on the largest subscription streaming service in the US. #FilmSky

What I find so strange about middle aged people now is that many are completely unable to process that things they liked as kids were made for kids. They don’t have to magical think them into being β€œgood” by adult standards. They did their job admirably, let them rest.

Two of the only lessons I remember from middle school, and rely on weekly at least, are from Home Ec, cooking basics and laundry care. Good thing we don't teach those classes anymore.

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Anybody adept at adding things to tmdb + Letterboxd? I’ve encountered something weird which is a movie listed on Letterboxd (with no poster or info), but not on tmdb. So I added it + crew and poster but don’t want Letterboxd to pick that up & have a double listing. And idk how to log it now -

My next book will be a biography of Jack Nicholson, written as an epic story of the transformation of the movie industry and modern masculinity from the 1950s to the present, with Nicholson as the main character. The title: Leading Man.

"We don't have room for Bryce Harper" was an actual thing Brian Cashman said. If you go back and look into the players that were the reason they couldn't be bothered to sign him, it might drive you mad, if you actually cared about the New York Yankees.

Inclusionary zoning fight erupts in Pittsburgh City Council, dispute with Gainey looms As Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey’s term enters its final three months, a battle over one of his administration’s signature affordable-housing initiatives β€” mandatory inclusionary zoning β€” boiled over in ...

Yesterday, Pittsburgh City Council Member Erika Strassburger tried to gut the inclusionary zoning bill by sneaking in amendments that no one in the public nor her fellow council members had been given sufficient time to review or read.
