On empathy Who demands it, who denies it, who deserves it.

“We operate in a society that demands that we empathize with the people who have and harm the most.”

Terrific read from @marionteniade.bsky.social.

The undying relevance of the Alien franchise A funhouse mirror version of our world.

The Alien franchise had maintained one ongoing narrative for nearly 50 years: how a megacorporation keeps feeding its workers, soldiers, and prisoners into a grisly machine to keep the gears of colonization and capitalism moving. It’s ruthless…and oddly comforting.

Also there's no need to obscure US history of barbarism. Some folks always want to reach for Holocaust comparisons like there's not a guard tower from Angola in the Blacksonian, like camps used to hold Japanese Americans were a picnic.

They gave detainees wormy food. The facilities were filthy.

Donald Trump's decades-long obsession with eugenics A timeline of the president's thoughts on "good genes," IQ, and which disabled people should "just die."

Donald Trump has long-espoused eugenicist and ableist beliefs.

For @motherjones.com, I put together a timeline of some of these greatest (or worst) hits, which shows a pattern, starting back in the 1980s. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

These various initiatives and policy changes are often regarded as discrete problems, but they comprise a unified assault. The Trump administration has launched a comprehensive attack on knowledge itself, a war against culture, history, and science. If this assault is successful, it will undermine Americans’ ability to comprehend the world around us. Like the inquisitors of old, who persecuted Galileo for daring to notice that the sun did not, in fact, revolve around the Earth, they believe that truth-seeking imperils their hold on power.

The Trump administration is engaging on an all-out assault on the institutions, workers and standards that make learning and knowledge production possible, in the hopes of securing political dominance forever. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

If the Mission: Impossible movies have been successful at one thing, it’s rehabbing Tom Cruise’s public persona.

(If they’ve been successful at two things, it’s that and convincing me that Tramell Tillman needs his own submarine movie.)

I am considering taking Three Billion Dollars of Grant Money away from a very antisemitic Harvard, and giving it to TRADE SCHOOLS all across our land. What a great investment that would be for the USA, and so badly needed!!!

FYI to media outlets, you're misleading your readers if you repeat this at face value.

There's no lawful way for him to redirect these grants elsewhere. It's a lie to distract from how the GOP budget guts educational funding, including Pell Grants at trade schools.

F.D.A. Poised to Restrict Access to Covid Vaccines Agency leaders said there was evidence to justify approval only for older people and those with medical conditions. Many others may not be able to get the shots.

Under its new leadership — who spread misinformation throughout the pandemic — the FDA announced it will limit all Covid vaccines to adults over 65 and those with certain medical conditions.

Covid continues to spread and cause harm. This an anti-science move that will kill more Americans.

There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.
