'It just seems cruel': Councillor shocked by comments after cycling accident Councillor Julie Fairey has become accustomed to abusive comments - but she was still stunned.

The abuse Julie Fairey copped after being HIT BY A CAR is exactly what happens when we treat online harm as background noise. Women in politics bear the brunt, especially women of colour. Until NZ actually regulates platforms properly, this will keep happening #nzpol

Lauraโ€™s Bunch bike is parked at the Seward Co Op grocery store along with about 6 other bikes of various types - one with a trailer

Does your local grocery store look like this?

If not, itโ€™s probably because:
1) zoning created large distances between housing & stores.
2) the streets between housing & stores are unsafe for biking.
3) there isnโ€™t any/enough bike parking

View of the central Copenhagen pedestrian street where it widens into a gorgeous square with fountain

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strรธget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued โ€œno cars means no business,โ€ but the street has been a massive retail success, the cityโ€™s busiest shopping street.

YouTube video by Evan Edinger I Cycled 2500km in London โ€” Here's How It Changed My Life

WATCH & SHARE: This is very good. A prominent youtuber is actually giddy (but also very thorough in covering the joys, advantages, issues and challenges) about how trying biking for transportation in London has changed his life.

Easy to watch & more convincing probably than 99% of public campaigns.

This community chooses 30km/h - Greater Auckland Meadowbank residents get creative to express the local preference for safer streets, after higher speed limits were imposed on the community.

Meadowbank, Auckland, residents have chosen safer speeds for their streets twice since 2021 โ€“ but Simeon Brown's Speed Rule forced faster traffic on them. So they started making their own signs ... www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2025/08/06/t...

People riding bikes in a protected bike lane in downtown Vancouver

People riding bikes in a protected bike lane in downtown Vancouver

Itโ€™s REALLY important that #Vancouverโ€™s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Bike-lanes mean business.

Thatโ€™s what #ClimateChange does.

Makes the bad things more likely, and worse.

More likely. And worse.

So @legallyfeminist.bsky.social hereโ€™s an example for the abuse files - NZ Herald put up an article about my accident on their FB and while there are lots of sympathetic comments there are also quite a number celebrating or laughing or asking disingenuous questions. Herald has had to close comments.
