I donโt hate cars. Like most North American males I was raised to think cars are cool, and as a design nerd, few objects are more eye-catching.
I hate surrendering our streets, our cities and our lives to them.
Car dependence isnโt freedom.

โSafety and space at risk as SUVs reach 30% of car market in English cities, researchers warn. Campaigners call for Paris-style parking charges amid fears big vehicles are taking up excessive public space.โ
Cities need smart strategies to manage vehicle size. NOT bigger parking space requirements.
While we were in Italy my wife kept remarking on all the small vehicles, both personal and commercial. One thing I stressed was that it's not that people in Italy necessarily like or want small cars, but rather smaller vehicles are the result of a deliberate set of policy and design choices.

Ahead, three children, all wearing helmets, ride bikes โ one in a yellow sweatshirt, one in black, and one in a patterned dress. A pedestrian walks on the sidewalk to the left. Apartment buildings line one side of the street, and parked cars line the other. Trees and bright morning sunlight frame the neighborhood scene.
People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isnโt moving kids, itโs redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers โ what would we say?
Authoritarianism โ letโs not pretend itโs something else when it happens in our American cities.
I love it! We are doing the same thing here in St. John's with tax data we purchased. But we are attempting to integrate infrastructure costs in small areas and summing the total resi and commercial tax revenue to compare against. We are currently testing our method on a sample area โบ๏ธ

But for some reason, many municipalities refuse to change their ways to allow smaller, safer streets and affordable housing

Yeah same with mental health and addictions. We can't build or maintain any health systems as it isn't in the jurisdiction. Best we can do is build supportive housing systems and work with the GOV. We could install needle drop offs and have a health group empty them.
The St. John's act is ass ๐ซ
It couldn't hurt. Sadly traffic enforcement is a provincial jurisdiction under RNC. Traffic should be under city control, but that'd require an updated St. John's act ๐

Stop signs and speed limits are regularly ignored by drivers. Bike whatever way you feel safe.
The only way to have safer streets is to design for traffic calming.
Too many get elected and then disappear.

People should be unhappy that the city's design forces everyone to drive lest they sacrifice their time.
It need not be this way. We can provide 100km of safe all ages paths for cycling, scooting, etc without much effort or money.
We deserve a people-first city #stjohns
I can help with that
It's so easy and so cheap to make safe spaces using the ample car space we have.
We sacrificed so much of our city to the least efficient way to get around.

View of the central Copenhagen pedestrian street where it widens into a gorgeous square with fountain
One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strรธget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued โno cars means no business,โ but the street has been a massive retail success, the cityโs busiest shopping street.

IMO Toronto needs like half the Streets it has downtown. I spent a full day confidently biking all over Montreal but I'm far more skeptical of biking in Toronto. So many assholes clearly speeding in cars everywhere.
Also every tram should be in a dedicated lane and have signal priority.
Next, water Street? #yyt Streets aren't noisy. Cars are noisy. Nothing ruins a pedestrian area like a loud engine showing off to no-one who cares just outside. The more pedestrian areas the better.
