There's no better way for a former prime minister to make the point than to slag the rest of us off for the benefit of Americans. Truss may need money. Although she can claim back up to £115,000 a year for costs associated with her public duties as a former prime minister, this isn't the same as a salary, and having lost her seat in Parliament, she no longer gets paid as an MP. But what she needs more is affirmation. We are all the heroes of our own narratives. Truss's political career ended in failure and humiliation at a level unmatched in modern British history. For her to still be the hero, this disaster must have been the work of some pretty special villains. "I'm going to expose the truth about what happened to me and who was behind it," Truss promised Solomon. The rest of us know what happened, of course, but one woman can never face it. This will be her story.

Unebelievably, I am older than Nige Fartrage. I grew up with Alf Garnet, Love Thy Neighbour and Bernard Manning, on TV almost every night.

At no point then – or since – have I made "jokes" about gassing Jews or that black people are unworthy (or worse).

He was – and is – misogynist and racist.

Farage clutching at straws. Manning was vile, and my parents wouldn’t have him on TV. The Alf Garnett and Love thy Neighbour narrative was aimed at showing up the stupidity of the protagonists; it was ignorant comedy tho and is now recognised as such. I wonder what type of home Farage came from?
