Health Costs Will Soar for Many in Mississippi Without Action About 331,000 Mississippians who rely on the Affordable Care Act could see their health insurance premiums jump by 37% on average unless Congress acts to extend COVID-19-era tax credits.

Mike Chaney, Mississippi's Republican Insurance Commissioner, warns that as many as 200,000 people here could lose health insurance if Congress unless Congress extends the expanded ACA tax credits.

"The wealthy people don’t care; they can afford it,” he says.

As if:
1) Stay home when the ERs are literally overloaded.
2) Go out masked once the ERs aren't overloaded and everyone has good masks but no vaccine yet.
3) Eventually get very selective about masking once there's widespread immunity

I am _really_ tired of people who take the fact that lots of people changed their behavior after they and their vulnerable family and friends were vaccinated as a sign that those same people all decided they were wrong during the global pandemic.

It's true that we're insured, but in certain cases we all get health care right away before someone shows up with an insurance card.

Also, can we get specific about what public health care we shouldn't provide to undocumented immigrants? Should we not give them vaccines, thus lessening the herd immunity that protects newborns and people with weakened immune systems? Should the ER have refused to treat my husband for his ...

But what does it mean to "drop them"? If abolishing the death penalty is unpopular, should blue states reinstate it? Should the next Democratic administration leave Trump's no-one-but-white-South-Africans refugee policy in place? (Because anything else will be an increase, and thus unpopular.)

Political party policy positions are simply not chess pieces that experts in public opinion can shuffle around to maximize vote totals. Parties take positions because party actors care about those policies, and also (less relevant with death penalty) because voters want solutions to big problems.
