Its super easy to say that when your livelihood doesn't depend on an algorithm that prioritizes shock value and drama over actual nuance.

I think he's just playing the YouTube game with that title. You know how it is. The video definitely came off much more nuanced than the title would make you believe. And definitely much more so than the million or so "BOTW/TOTK bad" essays out there.

My options now are
A. Find some retro game store that MIGHT be able to fix it
B. Try to find a new copy second hand
C. Mod my 3DS and “find” a copy to use.

Lowkey a bit sad…this game meant a lot to me.

I'm hoping this is a reasonable new years resolution.

September 2024, I purchased my two 16GB RAM units for about $85 on Amazon. That same two unit set now costs $440.

I feel like I literally chose the perfect time to build my PC because I could not imagine trying to do so right now.

I mean absolutely you're right. At the same time, having better performance does highlight Scarlet/Violet's strengths over its weaknesses.

And at least for that game the performance boost is free...

I'm so serious when I say that I genuinely believe that AAA Mario video is gonna change the gaming industry forever. It's so spot on with the way it satirizes modern game writing that companies will fiercely course correct because people will be able to spot it so easily now.

Going further, while we can't really trust most of what Abel said because it was all part of Caine's ruse, I think the part where he said "Caine's as much a prisoner as you are" is true. I don't think even he understands what he's doing here. That's why he's so obsessed with the real world.

He may be an "antagonist" but we also have to consider the possibility of who programmed him like this? What are they hoping to accomplish? What do all the people in the circus have in common that they would end up here in the first place? And what would happen if Caine finally crashes out?

He's desperate to be liked because it means he is fulfilling his function of entertaining the humans and keeping them happy and to do that he's sometimes had to FORCE certain things through the modifiers to get there. But he doesn't understand the concept of a "sense of self", thus the abstractions.

Not necessarily...

Caine is a deeply tragic character because I don't think he's actively malicious but due to his inability to have any understanding of humans or the outside world, he's a clear and present danger to the people in the circus and he needs to be stopped.

Like I think we can still operate under the assumption Kinger knows much more about the circus than he lets on, I think that's still true.
Everything else is kinda out the window though because we genuinely have no idea what's real or what comes from Caine's influence.

If it hasn’t already happened, I feel like we’re quickly approaching a breaking point where the average consumer starts pushing back on all this. Even people I know who aren’t terminally online are telling me they’re getting sick of everything being a subscription and just not working.
