Please read. Thoughts:
(1) some of this precedes Trump and is bigger than Trump.A story about how we allowed our rights to be eroded post 9/11
(2)Trump takes that pre-existing condition and pours gasoline on it
(3) a gov’t that treats its own citizens as the enemy is not fit to govern in a democracy

Of all the awful stuff in this reprehensible bill, the fact that your children stop being considered dependents at SEVEN may be the most horrifying detail.

#OtD 26 Apr 1937 the ancient Basque city of Guernica was bombed and largely obliterated by the German and Italian air forces at the behest of the Spanish nationalists during the civil war. The event was famously depicted by Picasso. More in this podcast: workingclasshistory.com/2020/06/17/e...

Mahmoud Khalil’s Son Arrives After ICE Refuses to Let Him Attend Birth (Gift Article) Mr. Khalil, a permanent resident detained in Louisiana, had requested a monitored furlough for the birth. His request was denied in less than an hour.

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's wife gave birth to their child without him after ICE denied their request to let him be present.

β€œThis was a purposeful decision by ICE to make me, Mahmoud, and our son suffer,” Dr. Abdalla said. β€œMy son and I should not be navigating his first days on earth without Mahmoud."

β€œWe never talked about men or clothes. It was always Marx, Lenin, and revolution β€” real girls’ talk.”

Nina Simone died on this day in 2003.

A celebrated musician, prominent civil rights activist, and radical, Simone brought revolutionary praxis to her music.

25 years ago today, on April 16, 2000, tens of thousands of people gathered in Washington, DC to oppose the meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

This marked a high point in the worldwide fight against neoliberal capitalism that remains instructive to this day.

A man in tactical gear and a baseball hat is taking an axe to a car window. He looks like he’s smiling.

A man in tactical gear and a baseball hat is taking an axe to a car window. He looks like he’s smiling.

This picture may haunt me to the end of my days.

It is an ICE agent taking an axe to the car window of an immigrant in New Bedford, MA. Not far from where I sit now. An immigrant with no criminal record was abducted by this smiling man.

An axe taken to a car window and to our democracy. 1/

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, author of The Gulag Archipelago, has something to say to us today:

β€œAnd how we burned in the camps later, thinking: what would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive..."

This is important. Just about everyone has committed crimes. The difference between a felony record and no record is almost always luck, money, family connections, race, and/or a whole lot of other things not within anyone's control.

Kidnapping.

Capturing a person against their will without due process is called kidnapping.

Transporting them to another country without due process is called human trafficking.

A squalid extrajudicial prison for people found guilty of no crime is called a concentration camp.

Found this absolute darling of a young cat scrounging for food at a remote location in a sleet storm about a week ago. It took us a while to gain his confidence and scoop him up, and then a spin through our local Humane Society for neutering, shots, and to check for a microchip or an owner. 1/

As a former child junior olympic-level runner, I have a few thoughts on the attacks on trans girls in sports. I ran for one of the most competitive teams in Southern California, and people who ran for my have gone on to become professional athletes. And these bans: they're fucking NONSENSE. 🧡
