Oh hey another social media site. What is this, 2005? Alexandria, VA resident. Quickly becoming radicalized on local politics by Blue Sky. Shitposts are my own.

In Long Island this weekend visiting friends and the weather is reminding me of college in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

13 degrees, feels like -14.

I know Alexandria is bad but holy hell this is something.

My dad's house has some old reference books (like old even when he got them before I was born) that present things like the "races of the world" alongside other encyclopedic type stuff that is actual real science, some of which still holds.

Fails scrutiny, but you have to actually scrutinize first.

Meh, 19th century pseudoscience is worth being cranky about even if the human need to fill a gap makes sense.

Also stuff like this seems to float around occasionally that is a product of a time and place without that context and it's worth noting.

DCist was known in part for its lively and engaged comment section. Do you miss that at all, or are you glad it's gone?

maustermuhle β€’ 4m ago I love this question. Mostly because I had a love-hate relationship with the DCist commentariat. Mostly love; I think they were pretty damn hilarious, though their humor was often at my expense. But most of them are locals who care about D.C., so I took everything in stride. I also appreciated that they somewhat self-moderated the comment section. They were pretty territorial, and they knew when an outsider was in their midst -- and how that commenter should be treated. It was, well, just a very unique place at a very unique time. By no means perfect, but perfectly imperfect. Do I miss commenters? Sometimes. It's a very good feedback mechanism. But l've also seen how comment sections are now just cesspools. If you don't moderate well (like the mods here do), you end up with content that absolutely no one wants to wade through or engage with. The DCist commentariat -- RIP -- was good for its time. Times have changed, though, so l don't know how I would feel if The 51st had a totally open comment section. Oh, and I have to mention this: The DCist commenters actually graduated to hanging out in real life! I was invited once or twice. It was hilarious, awkward, and endearing. They became real friends! And some of them were truly lovely people. Most of them. β€’ Vote

I’m one of those people who graduated to offline friendships as part of the Commentariat so I love this.

New deal: You pay the same taxes, we take your car because you're too angry to drive around other people safely, and use that to pay for a driver for you personally and a therapist who is with you on every ride helping you until you're not a hateful shithead posting on the internet.

03.02.2026 19:24 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And if you showed them an itemized set of numbers about what it costs to have that equipment, where their money goes, how much of the city is designed around their car, etc. they'd bitch about that too because of course it the city is then wasting on a storm that won't come more than every 30 years.

03.02.2026 19:24 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean I know that the same people who complain about their taxes being too high already and can't figure out where the money goes would also be upset if we had everything in place to deal with a once in a generation storm because it would cost more and their house was not the first dug out.

Opened Facebook for... honestly I forgot what anymore. It was something simple, but when the first thing in my feed was people in a group that allegedly loves Alexandria foaming at the mouth about snow removal, schools, and the "war on cars" (derogatory), my eyes started bleeding.

Probably?

I remember watching it when I was like 7. IIRC, it was Free Willy but dinosaurs.

Chances are high it was made for TV. I don’t know why it lives rent free in my brain.

Probably generated so Kid Rock wouldn’t feel lonely.

What if the offender is the city? Because pretty sure sidewalk in front of park land would be them.

Also… who wants to tell these CHUDS that Westside Story already covered the fact that Puerto Rico is in America.

Haven't had them cold, but I've had the TJ's ones and a couple other quality ingredient ones and I really just am meh about peanut butter and chocolate.

Will vouch for TJ's salted caramel chocolates though. I would eat a bucket of those as a last meal on Death Row.
