And the problem-solving and critical thinking that went into the original costume idea were sheer genius level.

I try to teach my students that anger, fear and shame are *terrible* states in which to attempt problem-solving or decision-making. That's why joy is resistance and why critical thinking is also important for mental health.

My dream is that people figure out how to help each other and realize they don't need this government after all.

Today in History - September 26: Officer reprimanded for preventing the end of the world. Stanislav Petrov was the Russian officer who prevented a nuclear strike. A Soviet duty officer's caution saved the world from nuclear armageddon on September 26, 1983.

My college student, who's taking econ this semester, was in tears at the end of our session because she was dreading going to her miserable job afterward. I really wanted her to take away two things from the ensuing conversation we had: - As her supply of suffering grows, the institutions of capitalism will find ways to pay her less and less in real wages. - She can always choose to say no. Below the text is a graph of unionism and inequality between 1917 and 2018. Inequality starts night, and unionism starts low. The lines approach each other in the 1940s and intersect in the 50s. After 1980, the slope for inequality rises sharply, and the slope for unionism declines sharply.

These kinds of sessions are my favorite.

'Instead' is a big concept. It goes beyond just 'not that.' When was the last time telling yourself not to have that last piece of pie worked?

I imagine that's pretty traumatizing. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I believe we're at an inflection point, and I have faith that humanity will build a more utopian society from the rubble of fascism.

Years ago, I once transcribed a cop 'de-escalation' training video. It was literally nothing but cops screaming at people and pulling guns on them and ended with cops shooting a drunk suicidal man.

Society is pretty patriarchal. Its architects are often the aggressors, not the survivors of aggression.

This is the best series I've seen since Future Man.

If humans had discovered the New World as a result of gradual exploration rather than purposeful/accidental conquest, how might things be different today? Suppose we'd approached 'new' cultures with curiosity and cooperation rather than colonialism and capitalism. 🤷 What if?

The passage suggests that: A. everyone is in agreement B. there is diversity of opinion C. no disagreement exists D. all ideas are the same The circle for B is filled in.

A typical incorrect SAT reading answer? One that says everything is the same or that everyone is in agreement. There's nothing interesting in homogeneity. Critical thinking is all about recognizing and understanding difference, friction and tension between things and ideas.

If we create a society where everyone has enough and there's little to no reason to think that other people are threats, we'd probably be able to think about much more interesting things than politics. We could be exploring the 6th or 7th dimension instead, for instance.

It seems apt that this WH thought this was a good photo to put out.

Any day we drive by more pride flags than MAGA flags in a deep red county is an okay day by me.

We all deserve to refuse discomfort. It's one thing to be able to tolerate feeling uncomfortable, but you know, remember when people didn't think health care was a right until they got to experience it?
