The process of hand rolling the delicate sponge layer around an ice cream log required a level of touch sensitivity that couldn’t be mechanised!

And it’s for that reason that I think it’s going to be much harder to replace people than most than most people realise.

We have seen similar with robotics in factories - there’s just some things that need a human touch.

I was once told that the humble Arctic Roll dessert (look it up kids) completely confounded engineers trying to automate its production.

… but it won’t actually know if what it has suggested will work as a dish unlike anyone with a modest amount of culinary experience.

Until recently ChatGPT couldn’t even tell you the number of Rs in the word ‘strawberry’.

But it’s also something I’m not immediately worried about. The leap in AI chat has been impressive, but underneath it’s just a really good predictive text engine. Ask it for a new strawberry cheesecake recipe and it’ll take a bunch of existing recipes and remix them into something plausible…

Technology could be used to free us all from the menial to allow us to follow our own callings.

Right now though the technology is controlled by increasingly few people. That’s not healthy, although it applies to wealth and asset ownership in general - everything is in a few people’s control.

Every one of these has improved our lives, although has also ended some industries and livelihoods.

Candle making was once an industry, which was then mechanised and finally made largely obsolete with domestic electrification.

That’s not to say I don’t have worries.

Economic arguments against AI have been made many times before for other technological leaps. The Internet, robotics and computers, electrification, combustion and steam engines… right back to the printing press.

It would be good to have the option of a flying LWB though. If Munoz is injured then we put in a sensible RB and flying LWB, or if we really need to score then have WB on both sides. Options are important.

In any case it’s a wasted season as by the time any new players are up to speed we’ll be down to 10 games and a high finish is out of the window.
Then we sell some key players, fail to adequately reinvest and do it all over again.
