hey just an FYI: we're not yet at the part where AI companies and the state are so closely intertwined that disclosing energy usage would constitute a threat to national security or some other such bullshit, making transparency into the environmental impact of data centers all but impossible

It was funny in an, oh god, it's too real, kind of way. It was like the actors were playing out exaggerated caricatures of tech bros. Except then you read about real tech bros and it's truly not an exaggeration 😭

As I've been saying over and over on our book tour for The AI Con, the inevitability argument (including in the form of "AI is here to stay") is an attempt to steal our agency. We don't have to accept that and I encourage everyone to refuse it.

Last year, @anterobot.bsky.social, @philnichols.bsky.social, and I considered what the Luddites offer educators in the struggle against automation in schools.

Almost half of young people would rather live in a world where the internet does not exist, according to a new survey. The research reveals that nearly 70% of 16- to 21-year-olds feel worse about themselves after spending time on social media. Half (50%) would support a “digital curfew” that would restrict their access to certain apps and sites past 10pm, while 46% said they would rather be young in a world without the internet altogether.

It's not regulators curving tech in a less harmful/damaging direction or big tech prioritising conscientiousness over profit that'll shape the technological future of society but rather it's public backlash that's going to be key. the tides are turning www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

And if he and his tech bro buddies fail to replace us, then they may succeed in deskilling and disempowering us in order to realize their vision of education as a Skinnerian surveillance hellscape that serves their shareholders and the ruling class.

This may be the last report on greenhouse gas emissions in the US and it was released thanks to a FOIA request by EDF. The data show that the US is making progress, but much more climate action is needed to limit the climate crisis.
