Wish people would stop saying Trump has done a U-turn on Ukraine. He does this every few weeks. Putin then makes a violent point of ignoring him. Trump's alleged change of heart is just a prelude to his next humiliation by Putin.

Hate is a strong word, but I re-read it last year (having loved it when I first read it two decades ago) and couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about

This is the logo of the Architects Registration Board. Governing body of the profession we entrust with the expert design of our built environment. It's a dare, I reckon. "You, an idiot, think it's ugly. But trust us, it's beautiful. We DARE you to get it. Ha ha ha, you fucking clots. Ha ha ha..."

Thanks for sharing these photographs. I used to live right by Republic (still visit occasionally) and was curious about the buildings and the sculptures; looking forward to any future updates on their history.

Genoa. It's reachable from London by train within a day, has loads of history (plus beaches). And its range of public transport oddities is impressive, including multiple funiculars, a narrow gauge railway to the mountains, and a lift that runs both horizontally and vertically.

In September 1971, when the new Pope was 19 and at college in his home town of Chicago, Led Zeppelin played the Chicago Amphitheatre.

Might have something to do with the greater % of UK houses that are old, as in early 20th / late 19th century, compared with similar countries in the rest of Europe?

Also, we're just not very good at building houses: poor insulation and damp are a consistent problem here

The new OpenAI creative writing bot's "short story" has the phrase "democracy of ghosts". It's the sort of phrase that would make me stop and admire it, if I were reading a human author - which, it turns out, I was, because it's from Nabokov's 1957 novel "Pnin".

Would've disagreed until this latest Cobel-focused episode, which has cast a sour note over the entire series. Hoping it was just a blip.

Trump is the most American of Americans. A photonegative of our unchecked id, an unruly brat destroying for the sheer lust of negation – a brutal, willfully ignorant hollow man who comports to the worst stereotypes that before only seemed to be half-true. The rough beast, whose hour has come at last
